ST. PAUL, Minn. - Nino Niederreiter snagged the puck off the boards and rushed toward the net, deftly setting up a wrist shot with a slick deke to each side. The puck whizzed past Nashville goalie Carter Huttons stick to give Minnesota an overtime victory but, before it got there, it had to elude Niederreiters good friend. Niederreiters goal with 2:44 left in the extra period lifted the Wild past the Predators 3-2 on Thursday night, and the tipped shot went between the legs of Roman Josi, who will play with Niederreiter next week for Switzerland in the Olympics. Theyll be roommates, actually. "I might mention it to him right now, but Im not sure if hell be happy about it," Niederreiter said. "At the same time, like I said, it was a big win for us and we needed those points. It felt like a playoff game out there because it was a pretty tough one." Jonas Brodin and Zach Parise scored early to offset two goals for the Predators by Craig Smith, who raised his team-leading total to 18. Hutton made 33 saves and helped thwart a Wild power play in the waning minutes of regulation, but that wasnt quite enough. All three goals Hutton gave up were to his stick side. "It was like a knuckle puck," Hutton said of Niederreiters winner. Josi was impressed by his buddy but not happy with him. "We didnt play that well in the first. We played a little slow, and they got on us quick. After that we played a good game. We obviously wanted two points, but its good to get a point on the road," Josi said. Smith tied the game midway through the second period when he redirected defenceman Victor Bartleys shot past Darcy Kuemper, who made his 12th straight start in goal for the Wild. The Predators hit the post twice in that middle frame and with another try in the third period. "A little bit of puck luck goes a long way," Kuemper said, adding: "I was just trying to do my part to battle and help the guys out because they were sure helping me out." Kuemper made 16 saves to improve to 7-3-2 since Jan. 1, and the Wild raised their home record to 21-7-2 this season. Coach Mike Yeo stressed to his players this week the danger of looking ahead to the break and not letting up against a team behind them in the standings, and their performance suggested the message was received. "I was real impressed with our guys, the way that they approached this game," Yeo said. "I asked them for a playoff-type mentality coming into the game, and thats a lot to ask for in February when youre about to go on a long break, but they brought it." Parise wasnt worried about a letup. "I think were all mature enough that we understood we have a game still before, and I dont think that was ever a concern about guys thinking about their flights tomorrow or their plans for the break," he said. The Predators had a jarring start to their day, when television announcer Pete Weber was taken for emergency heart surgery and general manager David Poile was hit by an errant puck that flew off the ice during the morning skate and hit him in the face where he was standing behind the bench. Poile was staying in a hospital overnight for observation and evaluation, the team said, and was unable to be present for the pregame ceremony the Wild held for all the Olympians in attendance for each team. Poile is the general manager for Team USA. "There was some bad stuff that happened today, but weve got to come out and find a way to get two points," Hutton said. "Good for them. We werent able to do it." The Predators are in last place in the Central Division but still within striking distance of the playoffs. "It was a good road point considering all the stuff that went on today," coach Barry Trotz said, adding: "We grind them out." The 55-year-old Spaniard held his first news conference on Saturday ahead of their Monday Night Football clash at Leicester, live on Sky Sports 1HD, and he purred over the passion of the city and the football club. The clause in his contract allows either him or the club, who are second-bottom and two points from safety with 10 games to go, to walk away if they crash out of the Premier League. But he revealed that Newcastles managing director Lee Charnley wanted the former Liverpool, Inter Milan, Napoli and Real Madrid boss for his experience - which is why he has been given the title of manager, not head coach. We have 10 important games; it doesnt matter if I am manager or head coach or whatever, he said. After these 10 games I think we will stay in the Premier League [and] I will be the manager. My first conversation with Lee was just about everything, and I said, What about the future? He said, We know we have done a lot of good things and some not so good things sometimes, but with your experience we hope we can go in the right direction. Rafas challenges We look at five issues facing the new Newcastle boss Some people can see the relegation clause as special, but its normal. I am here trying to do my best to stay in the Premier League, and if I have a compromise in the future it means I believe we will stay up.The main thing was for Lee to explain his ideas, and mine, and we have a lot in common. We want to bring in good players in the future and I am sure we will if everything is fine. Rafas ups and downs We look back on the career of the Spanish manager After I was a coach in the first division, second division, promotions, relegations - I have some experience, because I am getting older. Its more or less the same, in terms of how you have to approach the games. You have to be calm and analyse things, and make sure everyone is giving everything. Benitez was named as Steve McClarens successor on Friday The responsibility of someone who wants to win a trophy and doesnt want to make mistakes is more or less the same as the responsibility of someone who doesnt want to make mistakes because they could be relegated.I know we have a very good group of players and quality in the squad, so we need to give them confidence. BABE RUTH CALLING HIS SHOTIt was late in the Babes career as the Yankees were in Chicago for the World Series. Midway through Game 3, the Babe pointed to centre field while at the plate against Charlie Root. The ensuing home run on the next pitch has become one of the most talked about moments in baseball history. This is what the moment would have looked like had the Babe and Root been tweeting as the events transpired.STEVE BARTMAN INCIDENTFor modern day Cubs fans, this moment is as bad as anything that the team has done in their lifetimes. The Cubs were facing the Marlins in the 03 NLCS, up 3-0 in the 8th inning with a 3-2 series lead. Marlins second basemen Luis Castillo hit a pop up down the left field line and left fielder Moises Alou tracked it as it faded towards the Wrigley bleachers. What transpired next will still make cubs fans shake their head. A Cubs fan by the name of Steve Bartman reached out as the fall was coming down and disrupted Alou from trying to make the catch. We have seen this happen countless times as foul balls head into the stands, but the stakes of this game made this so much more painful. The Cubs went on to blow the game and lose their shot at their first NL pennant since 1945. Everyone wants to catch a foul ball - but few suspect that it will change their lives. Lets take a look at what it would have looked like for Bartman if he was live tweeting the events on that fateful night. Cheap Air Jordan 1 China . LOS ANGELES -- A judge refused Friday to immediately release former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper from jail in a Los Angeles rape case but said she would have to free him soon if charges arent filed in a similar case in Louisiana. The ruling came after lawyers for Sharper argued that he had been freed on $1 million bail and pleaded not guilty in the Los Angeles case but was jailed again after an arrest warrant was issued last week in Louisiana. "To hold him into perpetuity on an arrest warrant seems to be grotesquely unfair," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Renee Korn said. The judge set a hearing for Thursday to give Louisiana prosecutors time to charge Sharper or for that states governor to seek his return through another type of warrant. It was the latest development in several ongoing sexual assault investigations involving the 38-year-old Sharper in Louisiana, California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada. In a bail motion filed last month, Los Angeles County Investigator John Maccharella described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped. The New Orleans warrant says police learned from witnesses that Sharper and associate Erik Nunez had acknowledged having nonconsensual sex with two women. It does not elaborate on how the information was obtained or disclose the names of the witnesses. "Through further investigation by the detectives it was learned that Nunez and Sharper admitted to other known witnesses that he and Sharper had vaginal and/or oral sex with victims .1 and .2 without their knowledge or permission," the warrant states. Sharpers attorneys say he never made such statements and the arrest warrant was a pretext to hold him indefinitely without bail. Prosecutors, however, said they were following the law. Chris Bowman, a spokesman for New Orleans District Attorney Leon A. Cannizzaro Jr., said he could not comment on whether Sharper would be charged before the Thursday deadline set by Judge Korn. "Its an open investigation," Bowman said. "Im not going to comment on it. Im not going to put a timetable on it." In Los Angeles, Deputy District Attorney Javan Wygal said it would be difficult for Louisiana authorities to prosecute Sharper because under the laws of that state, the case there would expire within four months if Sharper isnt tried. Sharper was selected All-Pro six times and chosen for the Pro Bowl five times. He played in two Super Bowls, one with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie and was part of a successful championship run while with the New Orleans Saints. He retired after the 2010 season and was working as an analyst for the NFL Network before being fired last week. Leonard Levine, a lawyer for Sharper in Los Angeles, has said Sharper will be cleared in the cases. "All of these were consensual contact between Mr. Sharper and women who wanted to be in his company," Levine said after a court hearing last month. Nunez, a waiter, has been arrested in New Orleans, where a judge on Friday set his bail at $400,000. His lawyer Herbert Larson said prosecutors only had hearsay evidence against his client. Court documents in Los Angeles state that Sharper has submitted DNA samples to New Orleans police and agreed to turn himself in there if he is charged. Nunez also submitted DNA in the case, Larson said, adding that his client is not a flight risk. Sharper had been released on bail in Los Angeles on the condition that he remain in the city, stay away from nightclubs and not be alone with any woman he did not know before October, when the first allegations emerged. His attorneys contend he did not violate any of those terms before turning himself in after the Louisiana warrant was issued. Air Force 1 Online . Matt Le Tissier and Phil Thompson name their teams Matt Le Tissier (undefeated with two wins from two)Sergio Aguero - On his day hes the best striker in the Premier League and the sort of explosive player that can go out and score four goals in a game. Ill settle for a hat-trick this weekend.Kevin De Bruyne - Youve simply got to have De Bruyne in your team. He scores goals and sets them up and, as he showed in the Champions League quarter-finals, is a big-game player. Kevin De Bruyne scored in both legs against PSG Oscar - He may not have the goals as the aforementioned two but he creates chances and completess passes, so is going in as my safe pick of the bunch.ddddddddddddFernandinho - Hes all action, with passes, tackles and interceptions all day. Ill be hoping he can stay clear of the referees attention, though, having picked up six bookings in the league and another one in the Champions League on Tuesday night.Willian - His goals may have dried up of late but hes still probably been Chelseas best player this season and always provides a threat from set-pieces.David Silva - Ive packed my team with attacking midfielders in the expectation of an open game and, while Silva has had a relatively poor season, it says it all about his standards that hes still got 11 assists. Phil Thompson (debutant)Diego Costa - Aguero is obviously a great player but Id be concerned that he might not start after picking up a few knocks during their Champions League exploits, so Im going with the well-rested Costa.Gary Cahill - With Chelsea being at home theres obviously a chance they get a clean sheet and Cahill has always got a goal in him when he comes up for set-pieces.Pedro - Hes been having a better time of it with a couple of recent braces, so Id fancy him to get on the scoresheet if its an open game. Pedro is Chelseas second top scorer with six goals this season Kevin de Bruyne - Like Le Tiss says, hes an obvious pick. My only worry is whether hell play the full 90 minutes having only just come back from injury.Fernando - Ill have Fernando over Le Tiss Fernandinho pick with him playing in a deeper role and completing plenty of simple passes.David Silva - On his day hes the whole package for a Fantasy player, with passes, assists and goals.Who makes your VI? (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Blackhawks will try to record a point for the 13th time in their last 14 games on Tuesday night when they take on the visiting Winnipeg Jets. Chicago won for the third time in its past four games on Sunday despite hitting the ice with heavy hearts. Having returned from a shootout loss in Columbus the previous night, the Blackhawks learned that 34-year-old assistant equipment manager Clint Reif had passed away sometime Sunday morning. The Hawks held a moment of silence for Reif prior to the game and then managed a 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Antti Raanta made 31 saves for his third career shutout, while Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists. David Rundblad, Jonathan Toews and Kris Versteeg lit the lamp as well, improving the Blackhawks to 11-1-1 in their past 13 games. Its really tough to describe, something that still hasnt really sunk in for most of us, but we were definitely playing with heavy hearts out there, said Toews. Added Patrick Sharp, who had three assists, Normally when the game starts, you can kind of turn off whatever issues you have going on in your personal life, but tonight, I dont think anybody was able to do that. It was very quiet on the bench, very quiet in the locker room and we wanted to make sure we had a good game for Clint and his family. The Blackhawks are likely to start Corey Crawford for the second time since he returned from an eight-game absence caused by a lower-body injury. He made 17 saves on 19 shots in the loss to the Blue Jackets, his first action since Nov. 29, and is 3-2-0 in his career versus the Jets with a 1.61 goals against average and .936 save percentage. Center Brad Richards is questionable after missing Sundays game with an upper-body injury. The Jets come to the United Center off the heels of a 2-1-1 homestand, capping the residency with a disappointing 4-3 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Winnipeg led 3-1 at one point, but the Flyers scored twice in the third frame and then netted the winning goal 10 seconds into overtime. Dustin Byfuglien was one of three goal-scorers for the Jets, but he also lost the puck behind his own net early in OT that led to Philadelphias goal. Matt Halischuk ended a 27-game span without a goal and Mathieu Perreault also lit the lamp to give him three goals and four assists over a seven-game point streak. Ondrej Pavelec made 19 saves in the loss, one that dropped the Jets to 7-1-4 in their last 12. We stopped making simple plays. Its not that we couldnt make simple plays, we stopped trying to make simple plays and opted for a safe option, Jets coach Paul Maurice said. Maurice may continue his goaltender rotation tonight and give Michael Hutchinson the start. He has won three of his past four games and is 7-2-2 on the season with a 1.73 GAA and .940 save percentage in 12 games (10 starts). That includes a 33-save shutout in his only career start versus the Blackhawks, which came on Nov. 2 in Chicago. The Jets have won two straight over the Hawks, both in Chicago, and Novembers victory came in the first of five meetings this season. Sports Jerseys . Curtis Lazar and Mitchell Moroz had singles for the Oil Kings (4-5-1), while Tristan Jarry stopped 30 shots. ' ' '
TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed were the suspensions to Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette and Leafs forward David Clarkson for leaving the bench to get involved in fights, hybrid icing and players who are and arent making a splash in the pre-season. Does Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette have a valid case for appealing his 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to get involved in a fight? Darren Dreger - He may have a case. Its ultimately going to be determined; was it a legal line change vs. an illegal line change? He received the automatic 10-game suspension because it was viewed to be illegal. There is a process in the new CBA that you have to go through. Gary Bettman is the first rung up the ladder of the appeal process and if he doesnt adjust the total, Bissonnette does have another option where he goes to a neutral decision arbitrator and all of this has to happen in the next handful of days before the beginning of the regular season. Will Leafs forward David Clarkson appeal his suspension for the same infraction? Pierre LeBrun - David Clarkson will not appeal his suspension, telling reporters after Tuesdays game that he has decided not to. That is the only decision to be had. He had zero chance and grounds to change the mind of Gary Bettman or a neutral arbitrator that he didnt deserve 10 games. The evidence is clear cut and it took a while for him to get to that decision over the last couple days but he made the right one. Will hybrid icing be in the NHL this season? Darren Dreger - The good news is the NHL and the NHLPA have agreed on the language for hybrid icing which has been finalized. Keep in mind, the Players Association does have to sign off on this, so between the end of this week and Monday, the PA will conduct a full membership vote to see if they have the approval. The concern is, as the defencemen were getting pasted in the old system, well now maybe its reversed because if the forward gains the edge, he might be in jeopardy but its better than what is already in play. Where are we with the possibility of NHL expansion into Seattle? Darren Dreger - The Commissioners office, Gary Bettman and Bill Daly met with Chris Hansen, who is the project manager trying to get that new area built in Seattle. That meeting was on Tuesday and they will continue to monitor, but there is no official push for an expansion any time soon. Who are some players that are and arent making an impression in the NHL pre-season? Bob McKenzie - Dustin Penner is under the gun with the Anaheim Ducks. It would be fair to say they are a little underwhelmed with what he has done so far. They have given him every opportunity to be the left winger on the line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry but he has not taken advantage. In the pre-season game on Tuesday between the Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings, Penner is getting another chance with the big line but the chances might be running out for him if he doesnt step up his game. Bob McKenzie - Tyler Toffoli, who scored some great goals in the playoffs last year and Linden Vey, who was really good with Manchester, they have played well enough to be on the Kings, but they can be sent to the minors without waivers and right now, there is a body crunch and cap crunch with the Kings. They are trying to move either Keaton Ellerby or Jeff Schultz. They have nine NHL defencemen because of a healthy Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene, so some of those deserving players might get sent down. Bob McKenzie - Jake Allen has been the best goaltender bar none, better than Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott for the St. Louis Blues but hes quite likely going to get demoted because he can be sent down. Halak and Elliott looks like the one-two punch to start the season for the Blues. Pierre LeBrun - Valeri Nichushkin is a dark horse for the Calder Trophy and he has absolutely dazzled in Dallas with two goals on nine shots in his first pre-season game for the Stars. Sergei Gonchar is from the same hometown in Russia and has been a great influence. He was rated top three by the Stars on their draft list and a lot of people were scared to draft him because of the possibility of playing in the KHL, but they were lucky to get him at number 10. Darren Dreger - Tim Thomas could play for the Florida Panthers as early as Thursday. Hes been really good in training camp. Pierre LeBrun - Jose Theodore has an offer to play in the KHL. He isnt sure hes going to take it at this point but there is interest. Dale Berra Jersey .com) - Brad Stuart has yet to play a regular-season game for the Colorado Avalanche, but that didnt deter the club from signing the veteran defenseman to a two-year contract extension on Monday. Kent Tekulve Jersey . Henderson (20-3) received winning scores of 48-47 and 49-46, and the other judge scored it 48-47 for Thomson (20-6). The announcement drew boos from the United Center crowd. The Washington Wizards squandered an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter and eventually lost in overtime to the lowly Sacramento Kings. Isaiah Thomas had his first career triple double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to help the Kings beat the Wizards 117-111 in overtime on Tuesday night. DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay each added 24 points for the Kings, who rallied in the fourth to send the game into overtime and simply outplayed the Wizard in the extra period to snap a two-game losing streak. Veteran centre Marcin Gortat felt the Wizards let up late in regulation and it cost them a victory. "We were up five points (with 24 seconds left) and celebrating like we had already won the game," said Gortat, who had a physical battle all game with Cousins, the Kings highly aggressive young centre. "We loosened up way too much. We got punished for being too cocky." It was a rare loss for the Wizards, who had won 10 of 13 games before falling to the Kings for the fourth straight time at Sleep Train Arena. After being quiet through three quarters, it was Gay and Cousins delivering big time for the Kings in both the fourth period and overtime. Cousins, who finished with 14 rebounds, had 12 points in the fourth quarter and opened the overtime with two quick baskets and finished with seven points in OT. Gay made numerous clutch shots late in the game and continued that trend in the fourth quarter. He had 10 points in the fourth and six more in overtime. "To turn it around, go up by 11 points and give the game away, it hurts," said Drew Gooden, who scored 18 points in a reserve role. "They executed down the stretch and we couldnt get any rebounds. DeMarcus Cousins is a load." Bradley Beal had 19 points and Gortat also had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards. They had won six of their previous seven road games. John Wall had 14 before fouling out in overtime. The loss prevented Washington from moving within a game of Chicago, which has the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards (35-32) drop to sixth in tthe East, one percentage point behind Brooklyn (34-31).dddddddddddd. "Give (Washington coach) Randy Wittman and that team a lot of credit. They are one of the surprising teams in the Eastern Conference and they are trying to get a home-court advantage in the first round," Kings coach Michael Malone said. Gay broke a tie with a jumper and Thomas made a pair of free throws to give Sacramento a 115-111 lead with 13 seconds left. Thomas clinched the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds. Thomas, a 5-foot-9 guard who was a second-round draft pick three years ago, became the Kings starting point guard early this season and has responded by scoring 20 or more points 42 times this season. The triple-double was the first for Sacramento since Cousins had had one against New York on Dec. 28, 2012. "That was big and its great for Isaiah," Gay said. "Im proud of him for the fact that he effected the game in every successful category today. Size doesnt matter. He plays with fire." Trailing by five points in overtime, Ariza hit a 3, Wall converted on a fastbreak layup and Beal made a 3-pointer, giving Washington a 109-107 lead. But consecutive baskets by Cousins and Gay put the Kings ahead by two with 1:01 left. Beal made both free throws to put the Wizards in front 100-95. But a Thomas three and a running shot along the baseline by Gay tied the game at 100 with 5.6 seconds remaining. Beal missed a jumper in the final seconds. Washington started the fourth quarter with eight straight points to take an 81-70 lead. Cousins helped bring the Kings back, scoring eight consecutive points, the final two on a dunk that cut the Washington lead to 86-81 midway through the fourth. NOTES: The Washington starters shot 5 of 20 in the opening quarter and the Wizards trailed 30-19. ... Prior the game, the Kings signed Royce White to a second 10-day contact. He was not activated for the game. White, who was drafted by Houston in 2012, has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and has never played an NBA game. ... Webster had a four-point play late in the third quarter. ... The Kings are 4-2 in overtime games this season, while the Wizards are 4-7. ' ' '
MILAN, Italy -- Carlos Tevez scored twice to move top of the Serie A scoring charts and help league leader Juventus beat 10-man Parma 2-1 for a record 15th home win on Wednesday. Tevez has now scored 18 league goals in his first season at Juventus following his move from Manchester City. "Better than this is impossible, but the important thing is that the team won," Tevez said Cristian Molinaro reduced the deficit but Parma striker Amauri was sent off three minutes later. Despite the numerical disadvantage Parma almost snatched a draw but Molinaro was denied by a goal-line clearance and the visitors had strong penalty appeals turned down. "I dont know if it was a penalty, those who understand football know how to judge it," Parma coach Roberto Donadoni said. "I think sometimes you have to take into account players tricks, but you only have a matter of seconds to do that on the pitch." Juventus restored its 14-point advantage over Roma, which beat Torino 2-1 on Tuesday and has played a game less than its rivals. Napoli moved six points behind Roma with a 4-2 win at Catania and boosted its chances of securing the final Champions League spot as Fiorentina lost 2-0 at home to AC Milan. Mario Balotelli set up one goal and scored the other to help under-fire boss Clarence Seedorf, who was reportedly on the verge of the sack before last weekends draw at Lazio. "And some people say I wont even be going to the World Cup," Balotelli said. "This victory didnt save anyone, because there wasnt anyone to save. The dressing room is united. Of course, were upset because we wont get into the Champions League and maybe not into the Europa League either, but not disunited." Atalanta maintained its push for a Europa League spot as it beat Livorno 2-0 and leapfrogged Lazio into seventh after the capital side lost 2-0 at Genoa. Also, it was: Chievo Verona 3, Bologna 0; Sassuolo 1, Sampdoria 2; and Cagliari 1, Hellas Verona 0. Juventus had won all 14 of its home league matches this season, while Parma was on a club record unbeaten run of 17 matches. Tevez broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a powerful run down the right, holding off Gabriel Paletta before slotting a low effort into the near side of the net. It was his 17th goal of the season and an immediate response to Ciro Immobile after the Torino striker reached that tally against Roma. And the Argentina forward moved solo atop the scoring charts seven minutes later. Tevez found Arturo Vidal on the right and then raced into the area to tap home after the Chilean internationals cross-shot was parried by Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante. Parma got back into the match shortly after the hour mark with a fantastic volley from Molinaro on the edge of the area but Amauri was harshly adjudged to have elbowed Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini shortly afterward. Molinaro almost levelled near the end but Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon parried his effort and Leonardo Bonucci cleared in a goalmouth scramble. Parma appealed heavily for a penalty for a foul on Marco Parolo but to no avail. In Sicily, Napoli gave Catania an early warning as it had three good opportunities in the opening five minutes. And it took the lead in the 16th minute. Marek Hamsik found Jose Maria Callejon on the right and he crossed for Duvan Zapata to tap in for his first league goal. Callejon doubled the visitors advantage before Henrique scored his first Napoli goal with a strike from the tightest of angles. Zapata all but sealed the match on the stroke of halftime although Catania attempted a comeback in the second period as defenders Fabian Monzon and Norbert Gyomber also scored their debut league goals. Fiorentina forward Alessandro Matri, who is on loan from Milan missed a couple of early chances against his old team and it was the under-fire visitors which took a surprise lead in the 23rd minute. Balotelli had been dropped for the weekend draw against Lazio but he returned to the starting lineup and fired in a free kick which was parried by Neto but straight to Philippe Mexes, who headed in. Balotelli doubled Milans advantage with another free kick into the top right corner from 20 yards in the 64th minute. Fifth-place Inter Milan could close the gap on Fiorentina to just one point with victory at home to Udinese on Thursday. Parma is currently level on points with Inter, with Atalanta four points below the final Europa League spot following a club record fifth consecutive win. John Milner Jersey . The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be coming together at just the right time. Sidney Crosby scored two goals in the final five minutes, helping the Penguins to a 4-1 victory over the injury-riddled Blackhawks on Sunday night. "I thought this was one of our most physical games of the year," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "We saw it from the beginning of the game until the end." The biggest hit came in the second period. Already playing without Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks lost captain Jonathan Toews to an upper-body injury when he was drilled by Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik. Toews was holding his left arm on the bench before heading down the runway for good in the second. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville didnt believe the injury to Toews was serious, characterizing it as day to day. "Well get a better assessment tomorrow," Quenneville said. James Neal and Lee Stempniak also scored for the Penguins, who won their second straight and snapped a three-game home losing streak. Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves in his 36th victory of the season. Orpiks hit on Toews occurred with 6:30 remaining in the middle period. The two were going for a loose puck. "It was a big hit," Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp said. "You could tell he was trying to hit him hard. He knew who he was hitting. Its tough when you see your captain get hit like that." Quenneville said he needed to see a replay of Orpiks hit. Bylsma said he only saw the hit live, and believed it was clean. Orpik agreed. "Theres no penalty, so I dont know," Orpik said. "I think that hit happens 10 times a game." Its been a rough stretch for injuries for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who will be without star forward Kane for the rest of the regular season because of a lower-body injury. Bryan Bickell is out with an upper-body injury but is expected to return soon. Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa played with Orpik with the Penguins during their run to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals. "(Orpik) is a heavy hitter," Hossa said. "Thats his game. Its never easy to play against him. Sometimes hes on the borderline, but I know him as a fair guy and thats how I remember him." The injury to Toews galvanized the Blackhawks, who dominated play in the third period. But Fleury held up just fine. Crosby capped a 2-on-1 rush for Pittsburgh at 15:09 of the third, sending a wrist sshot over the shoulder of Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford.dddddddddddd He added an empty-netter with 1:16 left for his 36th goal and league-leading 99th point of the season. "Obviously, they were coming and they put a lot of pressure on us," Crosby said. "They started to take a few more risks and we were able to capitalize." Sheldon Brookbank scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight in regulation for the first time since February 2012. The Penguins and Blackhawks started the month at a snowy Soldier Field, part of the NHL Stadium Series. Chicago cruised to a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh on March 1 in the beginning of a rough month for each team. "We remember that snowy night in Chicago," Bylsma said. "They took it to us pretty good. We wanted to respond in this game and I think we did." The Blackhawks and Penguins began the day with identical near-.500 March records and one win in each of their last four games. Injuries to top forwards have played a role; Chicago played its sixth in a row without Kane, while former NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin missed his fourth straight for Pittsburgh. Both are expected to return for the post-season. Chicago added another big name to the list after the loss of Toews. "Weve played 11 games in 19 days, its a busy stretch of the year," Quenneville said. "There have been some stretches in the last three games that have showed that maybe this team needs a break." Chicago carried the play early, Andrew Shaw hitting a post less than two minutes into the game. But Pittsburgh scored twice in 21 seconds, taking an early 2-0 lead. Neal snapped a wrist shot past Crawford on a 2-on-1 and Stempniak got behind Johnny Oduya after a lead pass from Matt Niskanen and beat Crawford between the pads. Neal has 10 points in his last nine games against Chicago. Pittsburgh had a chance to add to its lead in the second period, but came up short on two power-play opportunities. Brookbank then delivered for the Blackhawks, cutting the deficit in half when he blasted a slap shot from the point behind Fleury. NOTES: Chicago last visited Pittsburgh in December 2011. ... If Buffalo Sabres general manager Tim Murray had to guess, goaltender Ryan Miller would prefer not to wear the only NHL jersey hes ever played in past the March 5 trade deadline. Speaking to reporters before the Sabres first game since the Olympic break on Tuesday, Murray said more than two teams, but "less than 10", have inquired about the goaltender and that Miller probably wouldnt mind a fresh start. "I dont think signing here is his first choice at his age, where were at," he said. "Were the 30th-place team." And although Murray says re-signing Miller is realistic, its the clubs current position at the bottom of the standings that appears to be forcing the rookie GMs hand. "Its not the route were looking at right now. The route were looking at is to get value for him," he said. After a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in which Miller made 36 saves and had two assists, the goaltender didnt disagree with anything his general manager said. "The things that theyre going to have to do are probably going to come during the trade deadline, and maybe Im one of them," he said. "I dont want to close anything off right now, but I know theyre kind of looking around for opportunity. I think thats probably best for everybody." The 33-year-old was selected by the Sabres in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He has been the teams starter for the last nine seasons. Miller is the Sabres all-time leader among goaltenders in games played (540), wins (284) and trails only Dominik Hasek in shutouts (28). His tenure and accomplishments in Buffalo are not lost on Murray when he fields calls from other GMs. "Players that treat you right and have played hard for you over the years, you try to do whats best for them too, as long as it fits into what youre doing," he said. "And by trading Ryan to a contender, a good team that maybe is lacking only his position, I think that weve certainly not done a disservice to him and weve helped the organization in our own right. Our goal, I think from both sides, is to pursue a proper trade." A proper trade, according to Murray in "a perfect world" would give the Sabres young players a few years into their development. Murray says he doesnt necessarily want to start from scratch with draft picks, but that he will if need be. "I dont think teams are going to bend over backwards to make life easier for us, so its going to be the determination to be made on what the best deal is offered and if its draft picks, its draft picks and well turn them into assets and players," he said. Another Sabre that Murray says is attracting a fair bit of attention is captain Steve Ott. Both Miller and Ott are impending unrestricted free agents. Once again, Buffalos dismal record has handcuffed Murray into making a decision on a player he feels could help any team. "The way (Ott) plays the game, the way he conducts himself, thats not the type of player that I want to trade away, thats the type of players I want to bring in, he said. "Its the type of player weve been trying to bring into the teams Ive been with and were not a playoff team so that changes the dynamic, obviously." Murray also confirmed hes had talks with interim head coach Ted Nolan about a contract extension. "Were along that path," Murray said. Nolan took over behind the bench in place of Ron Rolston last November. Balenciaga Shoes Discount . Rinne had surgery on his left hip May 9 and recovered in time to start the season. He continued to participate in the few remaining drills but went straight to the locker room instead of joining the teams group discussion on the ice once practice has concluded. “We were playing a game mode situation there and I just had a little bit of a fall there but thats whats going to happen in a game so thats what I have to get ready for,” Bolland explained on Wednesday. While he will travel with the Leafs to New York and intends to take the morning skate, as Carlyle and Nonis indicated, Bolland will likely miss his 46th consecutive game on Thursday. Nikolai Kulemin between Mason Raymond and Troy Bodie formed the third line at Wednesdays practice. “Right now its just day to day. Its just getting it stronger,” Bolland said. “You have to be 100 per cent getting back in the line-up. Dont want to be a liability out there.” But when he gets back in isnt the only decision facing Leafs brass faces when it comes to Bolland. An unrestricted free agent on July 1, he is said to be seeking a longer term contract in the $5-plus million per year range as reported by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. Anything over $5.25 million – the cap hits for both Joffrey Lupul and David Clarkson – would make Bolland the Leafs second-highest paid forward, behind only Phil Kessels $8 million cap hit which kicks in next season. Best ssuited as a third line centre, can the Leafs afford to have Bolland that high on their pay scale? GM Dave Nonis indicated he doesnt necessarily feel compelled to make a decision before the Mar.dddddddddddd. 5 trade deadline. “If youve got a player thats unrestricted it doesnt mean he wont sign if you dont sign him before the (July 1) deadline,” Nonis explained on TSN 1050. “Look at our situation last year with Tyler Bozak. We didnt reach an agreement (before the trade deadline), he felt we needed to have him in order to get into the post-season and at the end of the season, he was a player who wanted to be here and we wanted to sign him and we found a way to reach an agreement. I dont believe you have to have a player signed, Im perfectly content of letting the UFAs play it out and see where we are.” And that might be the wisest course of action. Once healthy, Bolland would certainly help the Leafs down the stretch and into the playoffs. Given that the Leafs have built a seven point cushion on a playoff spot without him for most of the season, his return can be viewed almost as if its a deadline acquisition, and a good one at that, without giving anything up. With a resume that speaks for itself – two Stanley Cups, a Cup-winning goal, a proven savvy playoff performer and a good leader – its not unreasonable for Bolland to look in the range of $5 million per season. If he doesnt get it from the Leafs, there will be other suitors more than content to offer that type of deal. But with Jake Gardiner and Cody Franson slated for restricted free agency at the end of the season, Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Bernier at the end of the 2015 campaign and Morgan Rielly the year after that, all of whom will be due raises, how much value can the Leafs place on intangibles? “I think a little,” Nonis said on TSN 1050. “You still want to make sure the player is a good fit, that he can contribute on the ice. Therere very few guys that are making an NHL living just on being good guys in the locker room. They need to be able to go out and perform on the ice but there are some things that dont show up on the score sheet that you look at.” Theres no debate as to whether Bolland makes any team he plays on better but, at this point, he could be a luxury the Leafs just cant afford. TSN basketball analyst Jack Armstrong is back to start the week with five quick thoughts on the Los Angeles Lakers incomparable Kobe Bryant, the resurgent (and healthy) Oklahoma City Thunder, the Sacramento Kings decision to fire Mike Malone, David West and the struggling Indiana Pacers and December 15, the day when this past summers free agent crop can be traded. 1. KOBE BRYANT (Lakers): Hes #3 on the all-time scoring list. Let me say it right off the bat, Id take Michael Jordan any day over him, yet I have tons of respect for what hes accomplished. Kobes an incredible competitor and scorer and, in his prime, an outstanding defender, who had the flair for the dramatic. Its a shame that his career is winding down on such a lousy team. 2. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER: Here they come! The Thunder has won six in a row and are a half-game out of the final playoff spot in the brutal West. Ask yourself this: if youre a top-three seed and youre looking at the standings, arent you dreading the fact that you might have to play this team in the first round? Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are back and theyll be fun to watch these last four months. 3. MIKE MALONE (Kings): In the category of You cant make this nonsense up, he gets fired? What a strange story. This guy is one of the bright young minds in the game and has done a pretty solid job of making a dysfunctional team better. A playoff team? No way. Lots of flaws? You betcha. Fired? Yes. What a wacky business this is. I dont care what you read or hear, this is another example of why certain franchises rarely figure it out. 4. DAVID WEST (Pacers): Watching him on Friday night against the Toronto Raptors, I looked at him and said, He deserves better. Its been a rough year for Indy and hes had to battle back from injury, yet he keeps after it. Hes a no-frills guy, but I respect his game. West is a total pro. 5. DECEMBER 15: Today marks the day that guys who signed free agent contracts last summer can be start to be moved. Theres lots of speculation with Carmelo Anthony and Lance Stephenson already and Im sure other names will surface. At a boring time of year in the season, this sure keeps things interesting. People begin to realize that it isnt working out and its time for change. The reality is, its never particularly fun when youre paying a guy tons of money and hes not making a big enough difference. And thats cool with him. "Im a rookie," Manziel said. "I need to earn my place. I need to earn my keep. Nothing here needs to be handed to me. I dont need to be treated based off what I did in the past, because that doesnt mean a thing at this level." The former Texas A&M quarterback, who oozes swagger every moment hes on the field, is participating in Clevelands rookie minicamp this weekend along with its other draft picks and unsigned free agents. Browns first-year coach Mike Pettine restricted access to Saturdays workout, which was held inside because of rainy weather, to local media members. Sundays practice is closed. Pettine was on the Jets coaching staff when popular quarterback Tim Tebow joined the team and wants to control "Manzielmania" as best he can. "Were well aware of the persona. Were well aware of what it brings," Pettine said. "Were excited about it. Its something that were very willing to have come here, knowing that he has a chance to make us a better football team and a better franchise." Pettine added that he knows the decision to limit access will "ruffle some feathers." "Ill apologize in advance for that, but what were tasked as a staff to do is do whats best for the football team," he said. Wearing a red No. 2 jersey, Manziel stretched with his teammates as Jay-Zs "Public Service Announcement" boomed through the speakers in the field house. With Browns owner Jimmy Haslam on the sideline, Manziel made a few handoffs and threw three short passes before the session was closed after 15 minutes. Manziel later answered questions for 10 minutes before the interview was stopped by a member of the teams media relations staff. Manziel tried to clear up one story about how he wound up with the Browns, whose long-suffering fans hope his arrival can turn around their woeful franchise. Cleveland passed on him earlier in the draft before trading up to take him at No.dddddddddddd22. On Thursday, quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains revealed during a radio interview that Manziel sent him a text message during last weeks draft, urging the team to pick him. Loggains claimed the text read: "Hurry up and draft me because I want to wreck this league together." Manziel confirmed he exchanged texts with Loggains, but said the one in which he claimed he would "wreck this league" may have been exaggerated. "I dont know if thats exactly word for word," he said. "It was something along those lines." He explained he didnt mean he was going to dominate as a rookie, just that he wanted to help the Browns win games. "Whenever it is I get a chance to play, I dont want to come in and be mediocre," he said. As for his desire to join the Browns, Manziel said that was true. "This was a place I felt comfortable with," he said. "I liked the situation here and I wanted to come here, and if they wanted to take me and were trying to get me earlier, I said, Lets do it. I dont know what kind of influence that had or what exactly that did." Pettine told Manziel that if he wants to start hes going to have to beat out Brian Hoyer, who made three starts last year before a knee injury ended his season. Manziel said he understands hes nothing special -- not yet. "I was completely OK with hearing that from everybody," he said. "I dont want to come in and have anything handed to me that I dont deserve." Manziel was humbled long before the Browns took him. "I got passed up 21 times, so that says something," he said. As for meshing with his new teammates, Manziel is fitting right in. Offensive lineman Joe Bitonio, a second-round pick, said there was a moment of awe when he walked into the locker room and realized his locker was next to Manziels. "At first I was like, Man, thats Johnny Manziel," Bitonio said. "And then once you get to know him, hes a normal guy." On the field, Manziel has already made an impression. "Amazing," running back Terrance West said. "Hes Manziel, right? Everybody knows Johnny Manziel. He makes plays. He makes big plays. Hes a great player." But right now, hes only Johnny Rookie. ' ' '
PHILADELPHIA -- Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will continue fielding plenty of trade calls on NHL draft weekend. "Were going to listen to everybody," Cheveldayoff said. "If theres a guy that a team has an interest in, then my phone is open for a phone call." Cheveldayoffs colleagues shouldnt bother asking about defencemen Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey and centre Mark Scheifele, but other than that the Jets seem open for business. Rumours have swirled around left-winger Evander Kane and defenceman/forward Dustin Byfuglien, who could be prime targets as other teams seek to take advantage of the Jets desire to make changes. Kane could be on his way out of Winnipeg this weekend or before the season starts. But if he is, Cheveldayoff isnt showing his hand. "Im really not going to get into those kinds of discussions," Cheveldayoff said Thursday in his pre-draft news conference. "I think its unfair to the individual players. Theres enough out there at different points in time that some of it is probably true and some is probably false. At the end of the day, it is a business where you do discuss making moves that will help each others franchises but these are people that are involved, as well." The Jets havent made the playoffs in three seasons since moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta. The Thrashers missed the playoffs in the four previous years. So understandably theres some impatience among fans, even in a difficult Western Conference. Cheveldayoff, on the other hand, is a paragon of patience, and that extends to this time of year. "You cant will yourself to make the playoffs," he said. "You have to continue to build and get the pieces that will try to push you forward. Thats why so much attention is paid to the draft and the process and certainly in our organization." The Jets pick ninth in Friday nights first round, the same spot they got Trouba in 2012. Scouts disagree about how many difference-makers are available in this draft, ranging from eight to 12. There is a consensus about the top five players available: defenceman Aaron Ekblad, centres Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, forward Leon Draisaitl and winger Michael Dal Colle. To get one, the Jets would have to move up. "You make the calls, you try and see if there is opportunities," Cheveldayoff said. "I guess there has to be an appetite in the different people to want to move because there are some good players there. Teams arent just going to say, Yeah, you know what, lets make a move. It has to make sense for both sides." In three drafts at the helm, Cheveldayoff has yet to move up or down in the first round. He has also not made a player-for-player trade at any point as Winnipegs GM. So history is stacked against the Jets trading Kane or Byfuglien, even if the current reality makes it possible. Late in the regular season after being a healthy scratch, Kane refused to answer a question about whether he had or would ask for a trade. Cheveldayoff danced around the subject Thursday when asked if Kane had requested to be dealt. "These kinds of questions are really unfair," he said. "There are lots of conversations that go on. Im sure there were levels of frustration at different points in time for individual players. From our standpoint, Evander is a Winnipeg Jet and I know that theres obviously been lots of different rumours out there. At this point in time, thats how were going to proceed. As far as any demands, were working as normal here." Normal to the Jets means continuing to stockpile talent at the draft. Only problem is, after No. 9, they dont have a pick until the third round, 69th overall, after sending a second away for winger Devin Setoguchi last summer. Its unlikely Winnipeg will be able to get immediate help with even its first-round pick. But Cheveldayoff could stay true to his long-term plan by making picks and moves this weekend. "Youre trying to gain depth in an organization, so that if you have other assets that other people covet, then you can maybe make those kind of moves," he said. "But until you have the assets that allow you to be competitive in the short term and maybe make long-term moves, you have to keep building." Air Force 1 Wholesale Cheap . IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The way Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan sees it, the 16th-ranked Badgers are playing better because theyre making shots. Theyre also making plays -- and Frank Kaminsky came up two huge ones to beat No. 15 Iowa on Saturday. Kaminsky had 21 points and a crucial late steal as Wisconsin won 79-74 for its fifth straight win after a 1-5 stretch marked by poor shooting. Sam Dekker added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers (22-5, 9-5 Big Ten), who swept the season series and moved a half-game ahead of the Hawkeyes (19-7, 8-5) in the Big Ten standings. "We like to get into our classroom and in the gym and teach guys things. Show them film, work with them," Ryan said. "Frank is one of those guys thats doing a heck of a job on his learning curve. Hes really been pretty sharp." No one was sharper than Kaminsky in the final 36 seconds. Josh Oglesbys jumper with 1:01 left put Iowa up 72-71, but Kaminsky answered with a jumper that gave Wisconsin a one-point lead. Kaminsky then stripped Iowas Roy Devyn Marble under the basket and hit two free throws as the Badgers went up 75-72 with 24.5 seconds left. "He was trying to make a play, and he presented the ball and I just hit it out of his hands. Thats one of those plays where its kind of up to the (referee) to see what theyre going to call. I thought I got it clean," Kaminsky said of the steal. "Im just happy it came out in our favour." Marble had 21 points and 11 assists for the Hawkeyes, who lost their third home game in four tries. Marble could have milked the shot clock down to just over a second on the games biggest play. He instead attacked the rim and paid for it with a turnover that the Hawkeyes didnt recover from. "You call a play and then hes got to read it. Thats what he did," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. This was just the second game in two weeks for Iowa. The Hawkeyes were off ahead of last Saturdays 82-70 win at Penn State, and Tuesdays postponement at Indiana gave the Hawkeyes an extra week off. After a rather rusty start, Iowa asserted itself in the second half. Marble hit a 3 and Aaron White followed with a strong drive to the hoop that put the Hawkeyes ahead 62-58 with 6:27 left. The Badgers seemed flummoxed at times by Iowas zone defence, scoring just 20 points in the first 16 minutes of the second half. Still, Wisconsin tied it at 66-all with 3:18 left on a three-point play by Nigel Hayes, and freshman Bronson Koenigs jumper put the Badgers ahead 71-70 with 1:21 left. "Hes a good player. Youre going to see a lot more of him over the next few years," Ryan said of Koenig, who had a career-high 12 points. Iowa was forced to make a rare lineup change. Forward Zach McCabe started in place of Melsahn Basabe, who was limited to just a minute because of illness. Basabe is one of Iowas top interior defenders, and the Badgers took advantage of his absence early on. Wisconsin hit 12 of its first 16 shots, and Dekkers 3 put the Badgers ahead 34-24. Wisconsin shot 57 per cent from the field in the first half, and Koenig matched his previous career high of 10 points in just 10 minutes as the Badgers led 40-31. But Wisconsin missed its first six shots after the break and Iowa eventually retook the lead, 52-51, with 10:55 left. Oglesby matched a season high with 17 points for Iowa. But White was held to just four points, and McCabes 3-point attempt with less than 20 seconds left and the Hawkeyes down 3 never reached the rim. "It didnt come out of his hand cleanly, but he was wide open," McCaffery said of McCabe. "I dont think hell make any excuses." Kaminsky shares Ryans assertion that shot-making has keyed Wisconsins recent surge. But Kaminsky added that the belief that those shots are going to fall has been whats really reinvigorated the Badgers over the past three weeks. "Having the confidence to step up and take those shots is back. I think we had that at the start of the season. It kind of went away for a little bit, and now I think we have that back," Kaminsky said. NEW YORK -- Two losses in Miami didnt faze Paul Pierce, nor did 16 quick points by LeBron James. The post-season, Pierce said repeatedly, is no time to panic. And the Heat, apparently, are nothing to fear. "Were not scared of them," Pierce said. Joe Johnson scored 19 points, Andray Blatche had career playoff highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets handed the Heat their first loss this post-season, 104-90 on Saturday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Pierce scored 14 points, Deron Williams and Kevin Garnett bounced back from awful offensive efforts, and the Nets withstood James 16-point first quarter and held him to two baskets over the final three quarters. "Tonight was the type of urgency were going to need for the rest of the series," Pierce said. Brooklyn, which swept Miami in the regular season, can tie the series with a victory at home Monday night in Game 4. "I think this is a must-win coming up Monday," Garnett said. "If we want to give ourselves any type of room ... any type of chance, I think that weve definitely got to take care of home." James scored 28 points for the Heat, who hadnt even faced a fourth-quarter deficit in these playoffs before having their eight-game winning streak in the post-season snapped. It was their first loss since Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The two-time defending champions were having an easy path to another finals, winning their last four games by double digits. But the Nets shook off the Heats sizzling start, then held them to 33 points over the middle two quarters to take control. "Ive been part of a lot of series and understand that the series is never won in two games or in three games," James said. "And you move onto the next one and you learn from the previous one how you can get better." Mirza Teletovic and Shaun Livingston each scored 12 points for the Nets in their first home post-season victory ever against the Heat. Teletovic made four of Brooklyns 15 3-pointers. Williams, 0 for 9 in Game 2, shot just 3 for 11 but finished with nine points and 11 assists. Garnett, just 2 for 10 for four total points in Miami, shot 5 of 6 for 10 points and seven rebounds. Dwyane Wade scored 20 points and James grabbed eight rebounds, but his night fell well short of what it could have been after his ferocious first quarter. He made a free throw to bring Miami to 59-56 in the third quarter, but Teletovic made a 3-pointer, followed by baskets by Blatche, Johnson and Livingston to make it 68-56. Teletovic made two more 3s and Williams knocked down another before the end of the quarter, which ended with the Nets ahead 77-63. Teletovic opened the fourth with another 3, and Alan Anderson hit a pair later in the period while also getting in a skirmish with Ray Allen that led to double technical fouls. The Nets held Allen to two baskets after he hurt them in both games in Miami. The Nets shot 53 per cent from the field, 60 per cent from behind the arc, and outrebounded the Heat 43-27. Brooklyn outscored Miami 53-41 in the second half, making 20 of 33 shots. "To sum it up, they outplayed us. They outplayed us, particularly in that whole second half," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Williams ended his slump with the games first basket, but Miami made eight of its first 11 shots, including one by James while Pierce was trying to wrap him up and was called for a flagrant foul. James was 6 of 7 in the period, and the Nets were lucky to be down only 30-29 when Livingston threw in a 36-footer just before the buzzer. James then took just one shot in the second, a missed 3-pointer, and the Nets pulled ahead late in the period and took a 51-49 lead into halftime. Colton Sceviour got the first two goals and Antoine Roussel scored on a breakaway in the third period to give the Stars a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. "This was a huge test for us," goalie Kari Lehtonen said. "One of the best teams in the league and we played last night and travelled here late, and showed up, and it was just a huge win." Cody Eakin had a goal and assist and Lehtonen made 33 saves for the Stars, who have won four of five in pursuit of a Western Conference playoff spot. Dallas entered the day three points out of a playoff spot before winning for the second straight night and saddling the Blues with just their sixth regulation home loss. The Stars opened a five-game trip after beating the Predators 7-3 on Friday and won without production from their top line of Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Valeri Nichushkin. "I dont know if desperation is the word. That kind of sounds bad," Sceviour said. "But definitely we feel like these are games we need to win. "This is a start and we want to build off it." Alex Steen had a pair of power-play goals for the Blues, who had been 8-0-2 in their previous 10 at home including an overtime loss to Dallas earlier this month. St. Louis fell one point behind Boston for first place overall in the NHL after a showing coach Ken Hitchcock labeled "sloppy." "What we are right now is too inconsistent," Hitchcock said. "Weve got too many players who are having good games and then are following it up with poor games." "Have to send a few messages here in the next couple games and see if we can get everybodys attention." Dallas led 1-0 and 3-1 against the Central Division leaders. "We feel like wed been all over them in the third period, then they get the fourth one," Steen said. "We were a little late tonight." Steen has 33 goals on the season. He scored on a deflection from the high slot in the second period and beat Lehtonen scrambling across the net on a long rebound in the opening minute of the third, each time shaving the deficit to one. Sceviour has three goals the past two games and Eakin also has scored in consecutive games for the Stars. Hitchcock picked a trio of former Stars -- Steve Ott, Brenden Morrow and Derek Roy -- for the opening faceoff. That line surrendered the only goal of the first period, with Otts turnover leading to Sceviours sixth of the season, and finished a combined minus-5. Sceviour tapped in a rebound off his skate to make it 2-0 at 7:21 of the second. "Theyre not the prettiest goals, but well take them," Sceviour said. Dallas needed just 25 seconds to answer Steens first goal on Eakins deflection. DETROIT - Max Scherzer was ready for all the questions — and he doesnt seem to mind that his contract status is such a big topic as spring training approaches. "I figured you guys wanted to talk about it, but this is the perfect time, during the off-season, when were not playing baseball," Scherzer said. Scherzer was at Comerica Park on Thursday for the start of the Detroit Tigers winter caravan. He recently agreed to a one-year, $15,525,000 deal with the Tigers, avoiding arbitration but leaving plenty of questions still unanswered about his future. Scherzer, last years AL Cy Young Award winner, can become a free agent after this season. He says he has no problem fielding questions about his future now, before spring training starts. By the time opening day rolls around, though, hell be focused on pitching. So theres a sense the clock is ticking if the Tigers want to lock up their star right-hander before he reaches free agency. Detroit signed ace Justin Verlander to a $180 million, seven-year deal shortly before last season, avoiding the prospect of Verlander testing the open market. But Verlander was two seasons away from free agency. Scherzer has only one more to go. "Every player wants to be a free agent," Scherzer said. "At the same time, you realize weve got a good thing here in Detroit." The Tigers have won three straight AL Central titles, and Scherzer went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA last season, winning the Cy Young two years after Verlander did. General manager Dave Dombrowski didnt offer many specifics about the status of negotiations with Scherzer, but he left no doubt about how the organization feels about the 29-year-old pitcher. "I would not characterize our discussion as strong, weak, anything other than we are hopeful that wed like to have him in the organization for an extended time," Dombrowski said. "I know he has expressed a desire that hed like to stay here. Hopefully that leads to a position where something can happen." A couple recent deals have given Scherzer a sense of the type of contract that could await him. Clayton Kershaw, a two-time Cy Young winner who is four years younger than Scherzer, reached a $215 million, seven-year agreement to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Japanese star Masahiro Tanaka came to terms with the New York Yankees for $155 million over seven years. "Owners are making more money, and therefore players are going to make more money," Scherzer said. "You have new TV money coming in. Thats good for everybody involved. Its win-win for the owners and for the players." Scherzer says his arm feels good, and that hell keep working to improve. He said his curveball can still progress, for example. "Theres always things you can tinker with in spring training. Its a great time to practice and try new things," he said. The question is whether this might be his final season in Detroit, but thats not a prospect Scherzer is too worked up about right now. "I love it here in Detroit. This is a great team, weve got so much talent, weve been together for so long, and Im comfortable," Scherzer said. "Obviously this is a place I want to play, and thats why I said hopefully we can get something done before spring training." Charles Johnson Jersey . Moises Alou Jersey .com) - Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh called Joe Flacco the NFLs best quarterback last week.DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tony Stewart is 20 pounds lighter and has a titanium rod in his surgically repaired right leg. As far as hes concerned, those are the only major changes since he broke two bones in his leg in an August sprint-car crash. So when the green flag drops Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway for his first race since the accident, Stewart believes it will be the same old "Smoke" behind the wheel. "Were not going to need a backup driver," boasted Stewart, who is scheduled to be in the race car for the first time Friday for 105 minutes of practice for the exhibition Sprint Unlimited. "I feel good enough that Im confident were not going to have to worry about anything," he added. "Weve planned for anything that we think might or could go wrong, and when I say go wrong, its not anything thats going to take us out of the race car. Its just a matter of making everything as comfortable as possible." Stewart has not raced in more than six months, an unheard of amount of time off for a driver who makes his money racing in NASCAR yet crisscrossed the country cramming 50 or more weeknight events into his year-round schedule. Six-time champion Jimmie Johnson isnt dismissing Stewarts chances of making a successful return. "Tonys a guy that when hes motivated, he can do anything," Johnson said. "And his motivation and desire to get in the car is probably higher than its been since he was a little kid, so it could be really dangerous for all of us, you know what I mean?" Last August, Stewart was leading with five laps remaining at Southern Iowa Speedway when a lapped car spun in front of him, causing Stewart to hit that car and flip several times. Stewarts time sidelined was certainly difficult, enhanced by the pain from his broken leg. He had two surgeries for the breaks, then a third to treat an infection. He was flat on his back, confined to the first-floor bedroom of his longtime business manager, where he was forced to lay with his leg elevated above his heart. When there was Stewart-Haas Racing business to address, team personnel did it at his bedside. Stewart required an ambulance to get to his doctor appointments, and when he finally was able to get out of bed, he needed a wheelchair to get around. And when Stewart -- a driver SHR vice-president of competition Greg Zipadelli referred to as "Superman" in the days after his accident -- finally made an appearance at the race track, it was on a motorized scooter.dddddddddddd Nobody was comfortable seeing the three-time NASCAR champion so restricted. Many wondered if hed ever be the same. Not Stewart. "Right off the bat, the surgeon, the therapists, theyve all said, Youre going to have 100-per cent recovery," Stewart said. "With that, from Day 1, it took the doubt out." Any questions about getting back into a race car were erased, and Stewart turned his attention to his recovery. He wondered when hed be 100 per cent -- doctors have told him it will take a year, and he said this week his leg is only 65-per cent healed -- and when the pain would subside. He asked doctors if hed always have some sort of lingering pain, and he threw himself into a tough rehabilitation program. As he progressed and moved closer to Fridays practice sessions, his SHR team built a module that includes a seat, steering wheel, steering column and pedals so Stewart could sit and hold the pedal down for 20 minutes to simulate the pressure of having his foot on the throttle. New teammate Kevin Harvick ordered Stewart a special pad that hangs off the steering wheel that will prevent his knees from banging into the steering column. Now his peers wait to see how Stewart will drive. Harvick said they attended a sponsor appearance together this week and when they left, Stewart "was like a crazed lunatic. You could see that look in his eye. He looked at me and said, Im ready to ... race!" A driver who has excelled in races because of his ability to feel the car, some have wondered if the injury has taken that talent from Stewart. He doesnt believe the broken leg has robbed him of anything. "When you hear the quote, Its a seat-of-the-pants feel, you feel it in your core," he said. "Everything that is processed through your brain is between your core as far as feeling whats going on. Your hands and arm are feeling pressure in the steering wheel. But as far as from your legs down, youre not really feeling that sensation. Its more of what your brain is telling your legs to do. "If we had to have an area to have an injury, my right leg was probably the one." Denny Hamlin struggled all last season after missing five races with a fractured vertebra in his lower back. But Hamlin cited Stewarts superior talent as reason why Stewart wont have similar issues. ' ' '
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- LeBron James heard the cheers from the crowd as he lay on the court holding his right thigh and writhing in pain. It only seemed to awaken the four-time league MVP. James scored 19 of his game-high 31 points after sustaining a thigh bruise early in the third quarter, helping the Miami Heat earn a first-round sweep of the Charlotte Bobcats with a 109-98 victory Monday night. He finished Game 4 10 of 19 from the field and had nine assists. "Its definitely sore," James said. "Im fortunate we were able to close out tonight and I can give it a little rest." He should have plenty of time. The two-time defending NBA champions will await the winner of Brooklyn-Toronto series, which is tied 2-2. If that series goes the distance it wont wrap up until Sunday. James said playing Charlotte was a good first test and Miami is headed in the right direction as it looks to win its third straight NBA championship. "We got tested by a young, scrappy Bobcats team," said James, who averaged 36.2 points in eight games against Charlotte this season. "We responded with a championship-type attitude." Chris Bosh added 17 points and Dwyane Wade battled through foul trouble and finished with 15 as Miami extended its winning streak over Charlotte to 20 games. The Heat improved to 16-2 in first-round games since James arrival four years ago. This was the second straight year the Heat swept their first-round series, taking out Milwaukee in four games last season. This was Miamis ninth consecutive series victory. "We improved every game and thats the most important thing about this series," James said. Miami began to take control midway through the third quarter shortly after James gave his teammates a scare when he drove to the basket from the left wing and his right thigh collided with Bismack Biyombos knee, sending James to the floor. Concerned teammates gathered around him and he was down for about a minute. James eventually got up and hobbled to the bench where sat down during a timeout. But he stayed in the game. After the timeout he buried a 3-pointer and a long jumper before a one-handed dunk to help give Miami a 73-66 lead with 4:51 left in the third quarter. Miami pushed the lead to 13 when Norris Cole knocked down a 3-point buzzer-beater from the right corner at the end of the quarter. Charlotte never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, the Heat went to James time and time again with Wade on the bench with five fouls. James scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a size advantage against Gerald Henderson. "LeBron was terrific during that stretch of the fourth quarter," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I thought the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter there was great execution and trust and the ball was moving and it was just working to the open guy. That was encouraging to see, especially at that time in the game." The Bobcats played without Al Jefferson, their leading scorer and rebounder who has been bothered by a foot injury since the first quarter of Game 1. "If you take away the best offensive player from any team in the league it dramatically changes your team," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Kemba Walker picked up the slack, playing tough throughout and finishing with 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting. "He showed that he is not afraid of the moment," Clifford said. "He had a really good year and finished in a good way so we should be happy about him." Walker called the game a good learning experience for the inexperienced Bobcats. "At the same time its our first go-around in the playoffs for a lot of us and we can only go up from here," Walker said. In the end, turnovers again spelled doom for the Bobcats. They turned it over 16 times, leading to 22 Heat points, including two dunks by James. The loss signalled the end of an era for the Bobcats. They will become the Hornets next season. Before the game the Heat showed solidarity with the Los Angeles Clippers over the Donald Sterling controversy. Like the Clippers on Sunday, the Heat ran out of the tunnel wearing their warmups, huddled at centre court and tossed their white shooting T-shirts to the ground. They then went through their pregame routine with their red Heat warmup jerseys inside out, hiding the teams logo. PITTSBURGH -- Considering everything the resilient Miami Dolphins have put themselves through over the last two months, a couple of snowflakes were hardly going to be a problem. Not with Ryan Tannehill throwing and running like a guy who enjoys the white stuff. Not with Charles Clay muscling through the arm tackle of a likely Hall of Famer for the winning score. Not even with a Keystone Kops finale that ever so briefly appeared to be for real. Clay bulled through Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Cortez Allen to score a 12-yard touchdown with 2:53 remaining to put the Dolphins in front to stay and Miami survived a wild finish to edge the Steelers 34-28 on Sunday. "I think I need some blood pressure medicine or something," Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake said. "Thats December football." Daniel Thomas ran for 105 yards and a score for Miami, including a zig-zag 55-yard burst to set up Clays winner. Clay had seven receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Tannehill, playing in wintry conditions for the first time in his life, completed 20 of 33 passes for 201 yards and three scores and also ripped off a career-long 48 yard run for the Dolphins (7-6). Miami blew a pair of second-half leads but improved to 3-1 in its last four games. Heady territory for an organization reeling a month ago after a bullying accusation against offensive lineman Richie Incognito by Jonathan Martin that threatened to rip the locker room apart. "Big win of us," Thomas said. "We have a do or die mentality." One the Dolphins nearly saw both sides of in the final three minutes. Caleb Sturgis drilled a short field goal after Clays second touchdown to put Miami up six. The Steelers got the ball back with 1:08 left but no timeouts. Three plays went nowhere and on fourth-and-4 from the Pittsburgh 26 Ben Roethlisberger took the snap just before the clock hit all zeroes. Emmanuel Sanders caught the pass and made it 20 yards before things went haywire. Sanders flipped it to Jerricho Cotchery, who handed it to LeVeon Bell, who then tossed it to 330-pound tackle Marcus Gilbert. Gilbert flipped it to Roethlisberger, who ran to the Pittsburgh 33 before throwing what appeared to be an illegal forward pass to Brown. No flags were thrown, however, as Brown raced down the sideline. As the Dolphins gave chase, Brown crossed the goal line. While he celebrated, an official pointed at the turf and ruled Browns left foot stepped out of bounds at the Miami 12. That sent the resurgent Dolphins spilling onto the field after the franchises first win in Pittsburgh in 23 years, one that came in the unlikeliest of settings. "I thought I had it clean," Brown said. "I thought I separated really good getting to the sideline, but it didnt seem quite enough." It never has been this year for Pittsburgh (5-8), which lost its second straight to all but end any outside shot of making the playoffs. Roethlisberger passed for 349 yards and three scores, but could do little but trudge to the locker room in disgust with his team assured of a second straight non-winning season. "There isnt going to be any quit from anybody," Roethlisberger said. The defeated capped a distracting 10 days for the Steelers. Head coach Mike Tomlin was fined $100,000 for interfering with Baltimore kickoff returner Jacoby Jones during a loss to Baltimore on Thanksgiving night. The kind of furor overshadowed the fact what little margin for error the Steelers had heading into December was gone. Now its vanished completely. "Weve still got games to play," Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor said. "Weve got no time to be whining pouting, thinking about the season." Neither do the Dolphins. Then again, they have something considerably more tangible to play for after showing theyre not afraid to get a little snow on their pristine white-and-teal jerseys. Miami settled itself as the snow tapered off, taking a 17-7 lead early in the third quarter then continually responding whenever the Steelers appeared ready to take control in a game that featured four lead changes in the last 23 minutes. Dickey gave up six runs and seven hits over three innings in the Blue Jays 10-6 victory over the New York Yankees Wednesday. The knuckleballer struck out two and walked four in his final spring training start before Mondays opener at Tampa Bay. Kelly Johnson had a two-run single in the first. Dean Anna hit an RBI double and Carlos Beltran drove in a pair with a double during a four-run second that put New York up 6-0. Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion got hit on the right lower arm by a pitch in the fifth and left the game. General manager Alex Anthopoulos said the first baseman has a bruise, but is fine. Derek Jeter walked, singled and lined out against Dickey. The Yankees captain was limited to 17 games last season after breaking his left ankle in the 2012 playoffs. JETER METER Jeter appears to be breaking out of his offensive funk. He singled in his final at-bat Tuesday, and is 7 for 49 (.143) overall. "We talked about it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He hasnt played really in a year and a half. Timing is an issue, and its getting better every day. Hell have tomorrow off and then play the last two games." DICKEYS DOCKET Dickey was happy with his outing, despite the numbers. "Today was not a day about results," Dickey said. "What was paramount for me was to exercise my arm in a way where I felt good. I was able to use a large range of velocities and I mixed in pitches that I would never throw during the regular season. They put in their heads its another weapon that I might use on them later. So, I did exactly what I wanted to do." STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Manager John Gibbons announced that Drew Hutchison and Dustin McGowan haave made the starting rotation.dddddddddddd. He was hit in the leg by two infield singles in the third, but remained in the game. The Yankees will start lining up their rotation for the regular season Thursday when opening day starter CC Sabathia will pitch. No. 2 Hiroki Kuroda and No. 4 Masahiro Tanaka are scheduled to throw Friday, with No. 3 Ivan Nova taking the mound Saturday. Fifth starter Michael Pineda will start a minor league intrasquad game Sunday. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Shortstop Jose Reyes, who missed his fourth game due to left hamstring tightness, took on-field batting practice. "We expect him to be ready for opening day," Anthopoulos said. "He could DH Friday. Were going day to day with him and see how he feels." Yankees: Jacoby Ellsbury, out 1 1/2 weeks because of right calf tightness, played five innings in centre fielder during his second minor league game. He is expected to be ready for opening day. Designated hitter Alfonso Soriano played despite minor tightness in his right shoulder. MOVES Blue Jays: Josh Thole beat out Erik Kratz for the backup catcher spot and will catch Dickey opening day. "Im thrilled," Thole said. Its a big honour." Kratz was sent to the minor league camp. Outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo, claimed off waivers from Arizona last Friday, has been told that he will not make the opening day roster. ' ' '
PITTSBURGH -- Pedro Alvarez mashed two home runs that travelled an estimated 831 feet Friday night. It was a series of sprints by the burly Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman, however, that ignited a 12-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Alvarez broke open a close game in the sixth by beating out a potential double play, followed it up with the fifth stolen base of his career then scored with a deft slide around St. Louis catcher Yadier Molinas tag that gave the Pirates the momentum they needed to pull away. "I thought the stolen base was key," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He puts a lot of focus on running the bases and hes arguably one of our best baserunners when hes on." It certainly looked like it, as Alvarezs outstretched left arm slid across the plate a split second before one of the games best defensive catchers could nab him. The Cardinals imploded from there as Shelby Miller (0-1) continued to struggle against Pittsburgh. Miller fell to 0-5 with a 5.92 ERA against the Pirates in his brief career after tying a career-high by allowing five runs in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander is 16-5 with a 2.34 ERA in his 33 other major league appearances. "Its not the park. Its not the team. I just pitched poorly today," Miller said. "I guess it just lines up that way where I dont pitch well when I face them." Travis Ishikawa added his first major league home run in nearly two years for Pittsburgh. Gerrit Cole (1-0) gave up two runs in seven innings in his first start since losing the deciding Game 5 of the NL division series to St. Louis last October. Six months removed from a taut NLDS that pushed the eventual NL champions to the brink of elimination, the Pirates sent an early message they have no plans of going away. Cole is considered the ace in waiting after a stellar rookie season in which he was arguably Pittsburghs best pitcher over the final six weeks. Eager to take the next step in his development, the 23-year-old kept the Cardinals in check by mixing a fastball that consistently reaches the upper 90s with improved offspeed stuff. He also showcased some of his maturity, working out of a bases loaded situation in the fourth by getting Jhonny Peralta to fly out. His only mistake came in the fifth when Carpenter drilled a shot into the right field stands to pull the Cardinals to 3-2. Otherwise he teamed with catcher Russell Martin to keep St. Louis in check. "I think it was just a really well-played ballgame on our part," Cole said. "I cant say enough about what Russ did behind the plate. Not sure there are any other catchers in the entire world that could handle what I threw at him tonight." Pittsburghs offence -- which mustered all of 20 hits in 35 innings of a season-opening series against the Chicago Cubs -- made sure it didnt stay close for long after pounding out 16 hits in eight innings against the NL Central favourites. Alvarez began the year in a 1 for 15 slump but ended that with a home run to the gap in left-centre for his first home run of the season. He added his second two innings later with a long drive to right-centre that travelled an estimated 448 feet. His hustle down the first-base line in the sixth allowed Pittsburghs rally to continue and the Pirates pressed the advantage. Molina committed a rare error after Alvarezs slide, botching a potential rundown at third base when his throw hit Martin in the back and rolled into the stands. The miscue gave the Pirates a 5-2 lead and Pittsburgh poured it on in the late innings. KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Canadian Daniel Nestor and Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic lost 6-4, 7-6(4) to Americans Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison in a mens doubles quarterfinal at the Sony Open on Wednesday. The young American pair put out the match-tough, sixth-seeded veterans in 73 minutes as Nestor and Zimonjic let opportunities slip. Nestor and former partner Max Mirnyi played in the final at the event in 2011 and 2012. Nestor, from Toronto, won the 2002 title with Mark Knowles of the Bahamas. Zimonjic began the match well enough with a love game but also lost his serve in the ninth game as Sock and Harrison took a 5-4 lead before serving out the first set in 27 minutes. The second set went into a tiebreaker as Nestor and Zimonjic tried to recover only to go down to the loss. "Im still not quite there yet," said Murray, who beat Donald Young in straight sets on Friday. "Winning matches of that length and quality so soon after the surgery is good. I need a break now to take some days off after I get back home. I deserve it." Murray won his 18th straight Davis Cup singles match and Britain beat the Americans for the first time since 1935. Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986. It will face Italy, which defeated Argentina. The United States is relegated to the World Group playoff in September and will need to win to stay in the World Group. The last time Great Britain won in the United States was in 1903 in the World Group Challenge Final at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. American captain Jim Courier was asked to put that in perspective. "It feels great to be alive in 2014," Courier said. "We certainly dont feel a lot of kinship to the last team that lost to the Brits on American soil since theyve been dead a long time. It has nothing to do with us. We come to play on our own terms." Murray split tiebreakers with Querrey in the first two sets, breezed through the third set in 29 minutes and won the match when Querrey returned a serve long. Murray leaned back and pumped both fists, and then swatted the ball into the stands on the opposite end of the court before joining his teammates in a celebration huddle. Later, he had a hot bath, an ice bath andd other treatment on his back.dddddddddddd Britain clinched the match at 3-1. The fourth singles match was cancelled. Murray reached matched point on Querreys serve in the eighth game of the fourth set before the American won three straight points to stay alive. After falling behind 15-30 in the ninth game, Murray got a new racket. He then double-faulted, giving Querrey break point. Murray won the next three points to clinch the match. In the first-set tiebreaker, Murray was down a mini-break before rallying to win when Querrey hit a drop volley into the net. "I tried to do a little too much with it," Querrey said "Every now and then you miss an easy one. It happened to be at a big moment." Querrey won the second-set tiebreaker on a forehand passing shot and then jumped for joy. Murray immediately rebounded by breaking Querrey twice to go up 4-0 in the third set. He broke Querrey again to win the set in a seventh game that went to deuce four times, clinching it when Querrey hit into the net. Murray said it was important to win the first set "because I felt like I was playing the better tennis for the most part of it. Then he started playing better at the end of the set. He probably played a better tiebreak than me as well. Just missed a couple of shots, like the volley on set point was a bad one, but he got himself into a great position. "If I had lost that it wouldve been tough after having served for it. Yeah, in these sorts of matches, first set can be crucial." Although Murray struggled on clay last year, he said he was surprised the Americans chose that surface for this match. He said the clay might have affected Querrey in his five-set loss to James Ward on Friday. "When we got here the court was pretty slippery and tough to move on," Murray said. "I would say for myself, one of my strengths is my movement on the court. I didnt know if that was something they had done intentionally or just the nature of putting down a temporary clay court. "Obviously it did have a bearing in the tie, you know, for Sam especially. I think his best surface is hard courts. He will have had all his best results on hard courts." ' ' '
