TORONTO – For the third time in three years the Maple Leafs and Cody Franson went down to the wire and begrudgingly agreed to a one-year deal. Due for player-elected salary arbitration in Toronto on Monday, Franson came to a last-minute agreement with the Leafs, inked for one more season at $3.3 million, a raise from the $2 million he garnered a year ago. Acquired in a trade from Nashville in the summer of 2011, the 26-year-old has butted heads with the organization in each and every contract negotiation, settling for a series of one-year deals which have highlighted the divide in presumed value between the two sides. Fransons camp believes his value is evident in production that ranks favourably at the defensive position – his 62 points over the past two seasons ranks 20th amongst NHL defenders – and a growing physical game – he led all blueliners in hits a year ago. He also showed comparatively strong possession numbers on a weak possession team and helped anchor a strong Toronto power-play unit. The Leafs were frustrated, however, with his defensive limitations and proved to be disappointed in his overall performance as a top-four defender last season. Hence, the ongoing divide. In the winter of 2013, the contract showdown lasted right up until the end of the lockout, an agreement for $1.2 million reached while Franson played overseas in Sweden. Last fall, coming off a breakout 48-game campaign, he and the Leafs remained, nonetheless, far apart in negotiations, finally landing (with some frustration) on another one-year deal worth $2 million with only two games to go in the preseason. It was a bargain the B.C. native felt he had no choice but to take. A restricted free agent one last time this summer, but with more leverage in the form of salary arbitration, Franson squeezed out a raise of $1.3 million. Yet to be embraced by the organization and set for unrestricted free agency next summer, he remains a candidate to be moved. Toronto has already restructured much of its previously mishmashed defence, bringing in a pair of Western Conference mainstays, Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak, aboard earlier in the summer. They also boast internal candidates – Petter Granberg, Stuart Percy, Korbinian Holzer and Andrew MacWilliam – who may be ready to step into the NHL next season, thus filling Fransons void if he were to be moved. The Leafs, who project to have plenty of cap space remaining, continue to work on new contracts for Jake Gardiner and James Reimer. Reimer, who is likely returning to the club next season despite a desire to start fresh elsewhere, is scheduled for salary arbitration on July 28th. Adidas NMD R1 Japan Black . PETERSBURG, Fla. It will be up to Phil Jackson to convince him that he can do both. With the Knicks season over and Anthony missing the playoffs for the first time in his career, he can begin thinking about his future. He plans to become a free agent in July and wants to be someplace where he can compete for championships. The Knicks never came close this season, going 37-45. Anthony said it was a "failure" and an "embarrassment" that hes unwilling to go through again, which could force him to look elsewhere since New York will have trouble changing its roster next season. "I want to come back. I also want to win. Me wanting to be here, if we can put ourselves in position to at least compete at a high level over the course of whatever, five years, the contract would be, then Im willing to stay here," Anthony said Thursday while wearing a red hat with the letters "NY" at the Knicks training centre. He met with Jackson, who took over as team president in March and has said he could envision Anthony as a central piece of the Knicks future. Less clear is what he thinks about coach Mike Woodson, who received a strong endorsement from the Knicks leading scorer. "To be honest with you, Mike Woodson, me and him have become, hes been a guy I can talk to," Anthony said. "Hes been almost a father figure, a friend, a guy who I can bounce stuff off of. Ive been a guy hes talked to multiple times about multiple things, different situations. So when that time comes, if its ready for me to step up and take that next step and say, OK, Mike Woodson needs to stay or go — I dont think it would come down to that — but Ill back him. If he needs my recommendation, whether its here or anywhere else, Ill back him." Amare Stoudemire said Woodson wasnt a part of his exit meeting with Jackson and general manager Steve Mills, and he hadnt seen him Thursday. Woodson led the Knicks to 54 wins and a ddivision title last season, and the Knicks embraced their high expectations coming into 2013-14.dddddddddddd But they got off to a dismal start and couldnt recover, bad timing with their best player having the option to leave. The Knicks can pay Anthony around $30 million more than any other team, but wont have much financial flexibility to build around him until a number of contracts come off the books following the 2014-15 season. Yet Tyson Chandler, who like Stoudemire owns one of those contracts, said changing the players wasnt what the franchise needed. "I think a lot around here is made about personnel and this and that. I dont think thats it," he said. "I personally think that you have to bring a winning culture around here, and until thats established, you can rotate players as much as you want. Its not going to make a difference." That winning culture has escaped the Knicks, who last won a championship in 1973 when Jackson was a player here. Anthony said he understood it would take time after he was traded to New York in 2011, but said hes "not at a point in my career where I want to rebuild" as he prepares to turn 30 next month. "I dont know if I can afford to wait another season of losing. I really cant see that picture right now," Anthony said. "As far as other teams thats out there, which quote-unquote team would be a better situation, you never know. Sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side, so this is stuff that Im going to have to sit down with myself and my family and really figure this out. This is not a decision thats going to happen overnight." He has time to think, since he cant play basketball now anyway. He began rehab on his right shoulder, which has a torn labrum, on Wednesday. "I just want to get away, kind of decompress and kind of clear my mind, because I dont want to come into this thing with a clouded judgment or things like that," Anthony said. "When I come back, my mind will be clear." ' ' '
