He became only the second man to shoot 63 in the final round of a major, matching the feat of eventual winner Johnny Miller at the 1973 US Open at Oakmont, and his 72-hole total of 264 also beat the best in any major set by David Toms in the 2001 US PGA and was three lower than the previous Open record set by Greg Norman at Sandwich in 1993. It was more than just reward for a player who has gone through two career slumps, the most recent as 2011 when he dropped to 230th in the world rankings.And Sky Sports golf expert McGinley joined in the plaudits for what will go down as one of the great majors of modern times. Even when that bogey on the first could have knocked a lot people, particularly with the way Phil started, he didnt. He gathered himself, he kept his poise and that was the foundation of his success - his mental poise.McGinley, whose best finish at The Open was 14th in 1996, hailed the high calibre matchplay between Stenson and Mickelson on a blustery links course and felt his success was a victory for European golf. This is a guy who can play. The only thing that was missing from his CV was a major. Stenson took the lead at The Open after a birdie at the world famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon Hes got a wicked sense of humour and is very popular amongst his peers. Gareth Lord his caddie is also very popular with all the caddies. Hes just a good person to be around. He works very hard in the gym - hes got muscles on his muscles - and plays a power game. And his putting. The slow greens suited him, no doubt about that. Every major championship is so difficult to win and Henriks career deserved that win. Didnt come back to play the last three of four holes saying he had an injury but then went out and won the following week [at the BMW International Open] and then goes on to win a major championship a few weeks later. Hes a guy thats inclined to just lose his mental poise, but when he has it, he really has it. We saw it in Dubai when he hit 68 out of 72 greens on a golf course in excess of 7,500 yards long so hes got all the ability and now hes turned into a major champion and fully, fully well deserved. The 62-year-old Dutchman has signed a three-year contract and will take over at Old Trafford after the World Cup in Brazil, becoming the first United manager from outside Britain and Ireland. United great Ryan Giggs, who announced the end of his 23-year playing career, will be Van Gaals assistant. "To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud," Van Gaal said in a United statement. "This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together Im sure we will make history." Van Gaal has experience of coaching -- and winning league titles -- at some of the worlds top teams, but even spells at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich may not prepare him for the rebuilding job required at United. The club has been in a state of flux since the retirement of Alex Ferguson last May after nearly 27 years in charge. Moyes, Fergusons successor, was dismissed last month before the team went on to finish seventh -- its lowest placing since the Premier Leagues inception in 1992. United also failed to qualify for European football for the first time in 24 years. Van Gaal is likely to be handed considerable funds to strengthen the squad to get United back in the Champions League, something the clubs American owners -- the Glazer family -- werent prepared to give Moyes. A return to Europes top competition will likely be the priority, followed by a desire to play the kind of attacking, dynamic brand of football expected at United but unable to be delivered by Moyes. United has broken the mould by appointing Van Gaal. In the clubs 136-year history, no previous manager has come from outside Britain or Ireland, a common occurrence at Englands other big clubs in recent years. The notion of United hiring coaches in a bid to create a dynasty -- something Ferguson uniquely achieved -- also appears to have ended. After spending six years at Ajax, where Van Gaal guided a talented young team to the pinnacle of European football by winning the Champions League in 1995, he joined Barcelona in 1997 for the first of two spells -- the first lasting three seasonns and the second barely half a year. But after the failed tenure of Moyes, United needed a manager who commanded respect and had a strong track record. His job wont be easy. While United has regressed since landing its record-extending 20th English championship last year, rival Liverpool has improved greatly under Brendan Rodgers and finished second in the Premier League this season. Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal are established members of the top group and showing no signs of being on the slide. The appointment of Giggs as Van Gaals No. 2 will satisfy those eager for some continuity at the club following the trophy-filled era of Ferguson. The 40-year-old Giggs published an open letter on Uniteds website an hour after Van Gaals appointment, praising the Dutchmans qualities and revealing his decision to end his playing days.
