NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils are so bad in shootouts, coach Pete DeBoer doesnt mind seeing his team take chances in the five-minute overtime. It got them a much-needed win Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild after they blew a two-goal, third-period lead. Defenceman Andy Greene scored from in close 2 minutes into the extra period and the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Wild in Zach Parises first game back in New Jersey against his former teammates. "Weve asked our D all year to create offence for us," said DeBoer, whose team has lost all eight shootouts this season and an NHL-record 12 straight dating to last season. "I think we have a little more urgency in overtime as a group because of our shootout record. There isnt any secret about that, so you get a little more aggressive." Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias each had three assists and combined to set up Greene. Elias carried the puck from his own zone into the Wild end and sent a pass through the crease that Henrique nudged toward goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Greene got the rebound and scored his second game-winner in overtime this season. Greene took a chance on the play. "I actually kick it out of the corner to start the rush and I thought about changing, but then I kind of saw we had a three-on-two," Greene said. "I supported it and the puck obviously squirted through their back door and I got some good lumber on it and put it home." Greene didnt care that the win wasnt pretty. "It doesnt matter at this point," he said. "As long as we get ourselves a chance to get two points in a game, who cares how it happens? Two points is two points." Despite the win, the Devils are five points out of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 12 games left in the regular season. "I liked how we played tonight," DeBoer said. "As long as we can stay fresh and energized and bring that game, theres no reason we cant keep winning." Michael Ryder, Mark Fayne and Jaromir Jagr also scored for New Jersey, which played with a lot more energy with their playoff hopes fading in the wake of the losing streak. Parise, Mikael Granlund and Matt Cooke tallied for the Wild, who have points in 17 of 21 games. The Wild, who have lost their last four games that have gone to overtime or a shootout, were limited to 10 shots in the first 40 minutes, but rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to tie the game at 3-all on goals by Granlund and Cooke. Granlund closed the gap to 3-2, beating Cory Schneider with a bad-angle shot from low in the left circle midway through the period. Cooke tied the game with 4:32 to play, deflecting a slap shot by Marco Scandella 2 seconds after a penalty to Travis Zajac expired. Parise, who was booed every time he touched the puck, got the Wild on the scoreboard with a power-play goal when he deflected a shot by Ryan Suter 21 seconds into the third. "To come back in the third period down against these guys, down 2-0 and 3-1, and we were able to claw back and get a point. There is a little bit of a silver lining," Parise said. "Weve got to turn that corner and start winning some of these games that go into extra time." Ryder opened the scoring with 3:02 left in the first, snapping a 23-game goal drought by taking a pass from Elias and ripping a shot past Bryzgalov from between the circles. The Devils had a chance to add to their lead when Wild defenceman Nate Prosser was given a somewhat iffy five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Devils forward Tim Sestito behind the Minnesota net. Minnesota, however, had a great chance to tie the game early in the major when Parise had a breakaway after defenceman Jon Merrill fell at the Wild blue line. Parise skated in alone but Schneider smothered his shot. Minnesota survived the power play, but New Jersey went up 2-0 midway through the second period on Faynes short-handed goal, which was set up by Henrique and Elias. Parises 24th goal of the season cut the deficit to 2-1, but Jagr got his 23rd of the season a little more than three minutes later on a power play. With Daniel Ricciardos maiden victory in Canada two weeks ago, Red Bull ended a six-race winning streak by Mercedes but the Australian driver and his teammate Sebastian Vettel did not come close to matching their rivals speed on the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton beat teammate Nico Rosberg to the fastest time in the second practice. Hamilton completed his best lap on the 4.3-kilometre (2.7-mile) track in 1 minute, 9.542 seconds, topping Rosberg by 0.377. Ferraris Fernando Alonso was almost a second off the lead in third. Vettel came sixth, more than 1.4 seconds behind Hamilton, while Ricciardo posted the eighth fastest time. Mercedes also came 1-2 in the opening practice, with Rosberg beating Hamilton by 0.140. "Its so close between the two of us," Rosberg said about the fight with Hamilton for pole position. "Im hoping we will still have the edge on everybody else. That seems to be the case today." However, Hamilton said he wouldnt mind if Rosberg started in front of him on Sunday. "Hunting definitely brings out the better side," the 2008 F1 champion said. "When you are in front, you feel vulnerable and any mistake you make you are going to be caught." In the morning session, Ricciardo and Vettel came only 13th and 15th respectively. "We clearly did better in the afternoon," Vettel said. "We are not there where we want to be when it comes to speed ... but it will be warmer on Saturday and Sunday and I think that will bring us closer." In the first session, Vettel brought his car back to the garage undamaged following a spectacular incident in the final turn. He came off the track and spun twice on the grass before the car came to a standstill on the track again. "t;That wasnt planned of course," the four-time champion said.dddddddddddd "I went too wide and the wet grass was slippery." Ricciardo also spun on the same spot shortly afterward, prompting team boss Christian Horner to joke "they were just warming up the crowd." "We are trying to find out the limit, and both just came on the grass," said Horner, adding the track was still lacking grip during the first session. "There was also a little bit of rain in the air. Thankfully everything is fine." Rosberg quit his first practice after 19 laps with a minor problem to his hybrid engine, enabling his technicians to fix the problem in time for the afternoons session. The German, however, couldnt keep up with Hamilton this time and didnt hide his anger as he was unaware over engine tests his team was applying on his car toward the end of the second session. "I was suddenly losing power and asked over the radio what was happening," Rosberg said. "Only then they told me they had changed my engine settings." Rosberg leads Hamilton in the drivers standings by 140-118 points going into Sundays race, the first GP in Austria since 2003. Most of the 22 drivers knew the track only from computer simulation. Alonso is one of just four drivers who raced on the track before, alongside McLarens Jenson Button, Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen and Williams Felipe Massa. The track is one of the shortest on the F1 calendar and features fast straights and only nine turns. Weather conditions could become an issue in the race as strong winds in the second practice Friday caused several drivers problems, especially on the third and eighth turns. The second session was considerably faster than the first as temperatures went up and teams were able to test their so-called supersoft tires, which helped cut lap times by approximately 0.6 seconds. The third practice is scheduled for Saturday, followed by the qualifying. ' ' '
Juventus eased to a 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Chievo Verona in Serie A as its remarkable home record continued on Sunday. Juventus, which has now won all 12 of its home league matches this season, remained nine points clear of Roma, which beat Sampdoria 3-0 in the days late kickoff and has a game in hand. It was coach Antonio Contes 100th match in charge. Kwadwo Asamoah, Claudio Marchisio and Fernando Llorente scored for Juventus, which conceded a comical own goal. "Its tough to be aggressive for the entire 95 minutes," Conte said. "But we cant allow ourselves to let up during this particular period. The minute our attention levels drop for a second, everything happens. "Its not easy for anyone to win for three years in a row, but these lads are doing just that. Everyone has surprised me in a positive manner, and I hope they keep doing so." Napoli remained four points behind Roma after beating lowly Sassuolo 2-0. "We created several chances to score, I cant be anything other than happy," Napoli coach Rafa Benitez said. "I never talk about individuals, but I see (Marek) Hamsik is improving game after game." Earlier, Catania pulled off a surprise 3-1 victory over Lazio to move off bottom spot. Also, it was: Genoa 3, Udinese 3; Atalanta 0, Parma 4; and Cagliari 1, Livorno 2. Juventus took the lead in the 18th minute when Asamoah curled a powerful effort into the far side of goal from just outside the area. The Serie A leader doubled its advantage 11 minutes later. Chievo goalkeeper Michael Agazzi did well to parry Andrea Pirlos free kick but Marchisio was on hand to net the rebound. Juventus had squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at promoted Hellas Verona last week and it risked falling foul of another Verona team after a sluggish start to the second half. Chievo pulled one back six minutes after the break as Stephan Lichtsteiners attempted clearance ricocheted off teammate Martin Caceres and into the back of the net. However, Llorente sealed the match in the 58th when he headed home Pirlos corner. Juventus has scored three or more goals in all but one of its past nine home matches. Roma kept up the pressure on Juventus with a comfortable victory in the evening match. Two sections of the Stadio Olimpico were closed in the first of a two-match punishment following anti-Neapolitan chants by Romas fans during an Italian Cup match earlier in the month. Mattia Destro scored twice, either side of Miralem Pjanics stunning 30-meter free kick. With his side three goals down, Sampdoria defender Daniele Gastaldello was sent off 10 minutes from time after a second booking. Napoli maintained its bid for a Champions League berth with a comfortable win at Sassuolo. Blerim Dzemaili broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after a series of fine saves from Sassuolo goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo. Lorenzo Insigne scored 10 minutes after halftime when he raced into the area and curled a shot into the far right of goal. Dzemaili also hit the crossbar late on. It was coach Francesco Guidolins 172nd Serie A game in charge of Udinese, matching the club record set by Giuseppe Bigogno, and he looked set to celebrate with victory after two goals in quick succession from Dusan Basta and Bruno Fernandes Moussa Konate reduced the deficit on the stroke of halftime but Udinese restored its two-goal advantage immediately after the break when Nicolas Burdisso tugged Thomas Heurtauxs shirt in the box and Luis Muriel converted the resulting penalty. A brace from Alberto Gilardino saw Genoa rescue a point. Catania had won only one of its previous 12 matches and started the day bottom of the table. However, it got off to the best possible start when Mariano Izco volleyed in off the inside of the right post after just 41 seconds. Stefano Mauri was making his first start since May following a ban for his role in a match-fixing scandal. The Lazio captain headed his team level in first-half stoppage time. Nicolas Spolli headed Catania back in front immediately after halftime and Gino Peruzzi sealed the result in the 58th minute. The relegation battle between Cagliari and Livorno burst into life a minute before halftime with a stunning strike from Emerson which swerved into the top corner from 40 metres. Tempers flared towards the end and Cagliari captain Daniele Conti was sent off for insulting the referee. Livorno ended the match in nine men after Federico Ceccherini was dismissed for two yellow cards and Marco Benassi saw red for a poor challenge on Mauricio Pinilla. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist stood tall with 41 saves between the pipes, but it was defenceman Ryan McDonagh who got the first star of the game as he had a goal and an assist and now has two goals and four assists for six points in two games. With a big series lead and a chance of wrapping up the series back at Madison Square Garden, the young blueliner was surprisingly low-key considering his performance in Games 1 and 2. "Just everybody else around me," he answered when asked what the key to his recent offensive success has been. "You cant have that success without your teammates doing what they need to do and getting you the puck in certain situations. "It was great fore-checking on my goal and simple play by Dom [Domenic Moore] to find me. You play like that and good things will happen. It was great passing by Richie [Brad Richards] on the power play and then just simple plays by everyone. Everybodys really contributing and its showing on the scoreboard." McDonagh now has nine points in 16 games in the playoffs, but six of those have come in the last two. "I was just trying to be a little bit simpler out of my zone," said McDonagh, who - as Montreal fans know all too well now - was drafted 12th overall by the Canadiens at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. "If I have a second or two to make a direct pass, make it. But I was just looking for stick blades too much at times and its tight checking in the playoffs so you want to make sure that youre not giving forwards an opportunity to grind you in your own zone. So the simplle plays will work a lot in the playoffs and Ive been able to make good reads and thats helped me.dddddddddddd" McDonaghs teammates have noticed the changes as well and are happy the hard work is paying off for their teammate. "The last bunch of games hes been getting better and better," said blueliner Marc Staal. "Obviously, we need that offence from the back end and hes really providing it right now. But its also the little things hes doing. "He works so hard on his defensive game and is so hard on his stick out there. Hers smart in his own zone and that cause us to have a lot of offense from it and obviously on the powerplay thats huge too. That hard work is paying off." Head coach Alain Vigneault echoed Staals assessment and credited McDonaghs defensive game - which in turn has led to more offence. "Both go hand in hand," he explained. "Like when Ryans gap is good and, obviously, hes got tough matchups because hes always playing against the other teams best line. "When his gap is good and hes battling hard in his one-on-ones, usually the offensive part of his game is there, and its been very good the last two games." BALTIMORE -- For much of the season, Shane Greene put up unspectacular numbers for Scranton-Wilkes-Barre of the International League. Now a member of the New York Yankees, the rookie right-hander is dominating some of the best hitters in the big leagues. Greene took a four-hitter into the eighth inning of his second major league start, and the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 Saturday. Greene (2-0) struck out nine -- including Nelson Cruz three times -- and walked two in his third big league appearance. He didnt give up a hit until the fifth inning and allowed only two runners past second base in 7 1-3 innings. "We were really excited about him in spring training and what he could possibly do for us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We felt he could help us at some point this year, and the time is now." It was Greenes second win in six days with the Yankees, the first coming at Cleveland, where the 25-year-old allowed two runs in six innings. "Hes stepping up, thats for sure," Girardi said. After going a combined 12-10 in the minors last year, Greene was 5-2 with a 4.61 ERA this season against such teams as the Buffalo Bisons and Gwinnett Braves. Somehow, that translated into success against the Indians and AL East-leading Orioles. "A dream come true," Greene said. "It means a lot that I got the opportunity and it means a lot that I can come up here and help the team win." David Robertson, the third New York reliever, worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save. Brian McCann had three hits for the Yankees, who moved within four games of the Orioles in the AL East. New York is 3-5 against Baltimore this season. It was only the third loss in 12 games for the Orioles, who finished with five hits. Chris Tillman (7-5) gave up three runs, seven hits and three walks in 6 2-3 innings. "Its another one of those (performances) that kind of gets looked at but is not properly appreciated because of what the other guy was doing," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. The 3-4-5-6 hitters in the Baltimore lineup went 0 for 16 with 10 strikeouts. In addition to Cruz, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy both struck out three times. "(Greene) didnt leave much over the plate and worked both sides of the plate," Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis said. "We couldnt get much going against him." The Yankees led 1-0 before chasing Tillman with a two-run seventh. Kelly Johnson led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch before Derek Jeter hit a two-out RBI single to left. That prompted the thousands of Yankees fans among the sellout crowd of 46,667 to chant "Derek Jeter! Derek Jeter!" -- saluting the 40-year-old team captain who will retire after this season. Jacoby Ellsbury greeted T.J. McFarland with a broken-bat RBI double, and the inning ended when Ellsbury was cut down at the plate trying to score on McCanns single to centre. Ellsbury was the second New York runner to be thrown out at home, although it hardly mattered as the Yankees improved to 10-32 when scoring three runs or fewer. An RBI double by Mark Teixeira gave New York a 1-0 lead in the third, but Jeter was thrown out trying to score on the play. That would be the Yankees final hit until McCann singled with one out in the sixth. Greene allowed only a walk through four innings and struck out the first two batters in the fifth before Manny Machado grounded a single to left. Ryan Flaherty also singled before Nick Hundley struck out. New York got runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth before former Oriole Brian Roberts whiffed on a high fastball with the count 0-2. In the bottom half, the Orioles got successive singles from Nick Markakis and Steve Pearce before Adam Jones hit into a double play and Cruz struck out for the third time. The Sports Networks 2014 All-FCS NFL Team basically does, and for the third straight season no less. Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys is the selection once again for the starting quarterback of our fictional team that spotlights the best of the FCS players in the NFL. This season, there were over 200 on rosters, including active players, practice players and those on injured reserved. Romo isnt the only three-peat among the selections. New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston, Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Austin Howard, guard Dan Connolly of the AFC Champion New England Patriots, Chicago Bears defensive end Jared Allen and Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Desmond Bryant also are back for a third time. Romo was the outstanding player in the FCS when he won the 2002 Walter Payton Award out of Eastern Illinois and Allen captured top defensive honors as the 2003 Buck Buchanan Award winner from Idaho State. In the pros, Flacco can say hes a Super Bowl MVP, but the former University of Delaware star continues to be a smidge behind Romo in the regular season, which this team is based upon. (SportsNetwork.com) - The Utah Jazz possess just two wins in their last 14 games, but they have come against last years NBA finalists. The Jazz aim to build off a recent win in south Florida when they close out their Sunshine State tour Friday against the Orlando Magic. Utah overcame a 42-point outburst from Dwyane Wade to post a 105-87 triumph in the third game of a six-game road trip (1-2). Gordon Hayward scored 29 points to lead the Jazz and Enes Kanter had 18 points. Alec Burks scored 12 points and Utah shot 53 percent from the field, making a season-best 14-of-25 shots from 3-point range. Hayward made four of his five 3-point attempts. A big-time win for us, Hayward said. The Jazz led 33-16 after the first quarter and the Heat stayed tight throughout until the visitors used a 10-2 run to pull away. Hayward and Burks both buried 3-pointers in the fourth to pad the lead. Hayward has scored 15 or more points 10 times in the past 11 games. The win ended a six-game road losing streak for the Jazz and they are 3-10 outside Salt Lake City. Charlotte and Memphis are the final two destinations on this junket for Utah. Orlando is home for the next four games against Utah, Philadelphia, Boston and Cleveland, and has a 3-6 record at Amway Center. The Magic were on the road the last two games and dropped decisions in Toronto and Boston. The Celtics put together a 109-92 win and the Magic suffered defeat for the 10th time in the past 14 tries. Nikola Vucevic paced the Magic with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Tobias Harris scored 17 points and both Channing Frye and Evan Fournier provided 13 points for Orlando, which made 43.5 percent from the field and couldnt shut down a Boston club that sank 55 percent of its shots. They were scoring at will on us, said Harris. Youre not going to beat teams if you dont play defense. Orlando is second-to-last in scoring with 93.8 points per game and will take on a Jazz team allowing 101.7 ppg. The Magic defeated the Jazz, 98-93, on the road Dec. 5 and were led by Harris 22 points. Derrick Favors had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Utah in that one, but has been bothered by an ankle problem recently. The Magic ended a seven-game losing streak in the series with that win. Utah has won its last three visits to Amway Center. Hayward averaged 14.5 ppg against Orlando in 2013-14. After a 10-game skid, winning sure feels good. Atlantas third error in the last two innings allowed Jackie Bradley Jr. to score from second as the Red Sox rallied to beat Atlanta 4-3 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win. "They contributed with some balls in play on the defensive side of things," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Just a good comeback win overall." Boston trailed 3-1 before tying it with a pair of runs in the eighth then won it in the ninth. Bradley and Brock Holt drew back-to-back walks off closer Craig Kimbrel (0-1). Xander Bogaerts followed with a hard grounder to Chris Johnson at third base for an infield single. Johnson stopped it and made a strong throw but La Stella missed the catch with Holt bearing down. Bradley hadnt even scored yet when the Red Sox began rushing out of the dugout. "The arrows pointing in the right direction," Bradley said. Bogaerts was credited with a single and the error was initially charged to Johnson. The official scoring on the play was changed later and the error charged to La Stella. The change mattered little to the Braves, who had no errors before taking a 3-1 lead into the eighth. "You play this game long enough, things like that are going to happen," said centre fielder B.J. Upton, who had one of two errors for the Braves in the eighth. "Well get by it and be ready to play tomorrow." Koji Uehara (1-1) got the win after eight solid innings by starter Jake Peavy for the Red Sox, who completed a four-game sweep in the home-and-home series with the Braves. "Its just unfortunate. I felt like we were making good pitches at the end and the balls were just dropping in," Atlanta starter Mike Minor said. "Theyre a tough team. I feel like every four games we played them, they battled back every time. Its kind of expected out of them to battle back." Minor also pitched well, holding Boston to one ruun on seven hits in seven innings.dddddddddddd Minor didnt walk a batter and struck out three. Jason Heyward homered and Freddie Freeman drove in a run and scored once for the Braves, who lost their fourth straight and fifth in six games. Atlanta led 3-1 when Holt led off the eighth with a bloop single to left off reliever David Carpenter. He went to second when left fielder Justin Upton took his eye off the ball and it bounced past him. Bogaerts followed with an RBI single and Dustin Pedroia reached on a slow roller up the middle that was called a hit. A.J. Pierzynski followed with another single to centre that B.J. Upton let get by him for the second error of the inning, allowing Bogaerts to score and tie it at 3-all. "I had it lined up right in the middle of my body and went to field it. The grass just kind of took it away from me," B.J. Upton said. Atlanta had just gone up 3-1 with a run in the top of the eighth. B.J. Upton led off with a single to left and scored when Freeman followed with a double off the wall in left-centre. Heywards homer with two outs in the third gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead. The Braves added a run in the fourth when Freeman led off with a walk, advanced to second on a balk and scored on Evan Gattis single. Boston cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fifth when David Ross doubled and scored on a two-out double by Holt. Peavy allowed three runs on eight hits in eight innings. He struck out four and walked one. NOTES: Boston returns to American League play Friday when Tampa Bay visits Friday with LHP David Price (4-4) facing Boston righty Brandon Workman (0-0). ... The New York Knicks have signed Lou Amundson to a second 10-day contract. In two games with the Knicks, the 6-9 forward is averaging 5 points and 4.5 rebounds. Amundson was originally acquired by New York from the Cleveland Cavaliers in the three team trade that sent J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to Cleveland and Dion Waiters to Oklahoma City. He was waived before the team signed him to his first 10-day deal. Players can only be signed to a maximum of two 10-day contracts before they need to be signed for the rest of the season if a team wants to keep them. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says its his full expectation that manager Ron Washington will return next season. The Rangers started play Tuesday mired in a seven-game losing streak and have seen their AL West title hopes apparently slip away for a second straight season because of a September slide. Texas dropped 12 of its first 14 games this month. "I refer to us as partners, and I feel very much that way," Daniels said before Tuesday nights game at Tampa Bay. "Other than that, well address everything in the off-season. Like I said, I fully expect that partnership will continue." Texas is in a crowded field for an AL wild-card spot. "Were in a position to makee the playoffs .dddddddddddd.. its our job to hold on to that," Daniels said. "Weve got to go and have a good at-bat, a good inning, a good game and turn the tide here a little bit. Thats where our focus has to be. Everything else is just a distraction from where our energy and focus should be." Washington, who managed the Rangers to the playoffs each of the past three years including trips to the World Series in 2010 and 2011, said he doesnt fear losing his job. "Im steadfast with what my job has always been," Washington said. "Be the best I can be for this organization as the manager. Back my players. Back my coaching staff. Back the organization. Do the best job I can." ' ' '
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone suddenly has a big hole to fill at defensive co-ordinator with Mike Pettine leaving to take over the Cleveland Browns. With Pettine hired on Thursday, Marrone is forced to enact the contingency plan the team began preparing once Cleveland honed in on his key assistant. "We have a plan in place," Marrone said, in a statement released by the team. "I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Mike on becoming the Browns new head coach and thank him for all of his time and efforts with our team this past season. He did an excellent job of improving our defence, and we wish him the best." Marrone did not reveal a timetable or list of potential candidates. Depending on whether any Bills assistants follow Pettine to Cleveland, Buffalo has several in-house assistants to consider, most notably linebackers coach Jim ONeil and defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson. ONeil has spent the past five seasons working under Pettine, including the first four with the New York Jets. Henderson is the most experienced, having split 29 years as a coach at the NFL and college levels, including stints as a defensive co-ordinator with the Detroit Lions in 2006 and Jets, 2004-05. Replacing Pettine is not something Marrone was anticipating a year after luring the former Jets defensive co-ordinator to Buffalo to become the most-high profile member of his first staff. Pettines departure is a significant blow to a defence that emerged as the Bills strength last season. And the loss has the potential of under-cutting much of the progress the Bills hoped would carry over into next season after a 6-10 finish that extended the NFLs longest active playoff drought to 14 seasons. Continuity also becomes an issue for a defence set to be led by a fourth co-ordinator in as many years. Pettine succeeded Dave Wannstedt, who was fired along with Chan Gailey and his staff a year ago. Wannstedt replaced George Edwards, who struggled during his two years as co-ordinator. Pettine, in one season in Buffalo, played a considerable role in transforming the Bills once-porous defence into an aggressive unit that finished second in the NFL with a franchise-record 57 sacks. Though the Bills were inconsistent against the run, they still finished 10th in the NFL in fewest yards allowed — Buffalos best ranking since finishing second in 2004. The Bills success on defence translated into four players earning Pro Bowl selections, including defensive tackle Marcell Dareus as a last-minute injury replacement. Also selected were defensive linemen Mario Williams and Kyle Williams and safety Jairus Byrd. In November, Pettine indicated he was in no hurry to leave Buffalo. He enjoyed the community and also wanted to continue what he began building with the Bills. Pettines approach and no-nonsense demeanour was popular among players and staff. During the Bills bye weekend off in November, Pettine and a number of assistants spent a weekend sharing a cabin in nearby Ellicottville. He also earned raves among several veterans, including Mario Williams, who led the team with 13 1/2 sacks. Pettine learned his defensive approach under Jets coach Rex Ryan. And its a style thats somewhat unique among NFL teams in placing a premium on players versatility and capability of playing several positions to confuse offences. The secondary benefited in finishing second in the NFL with 23 interceptions. The change at co-ordinator could have an effect on Byrds desire to return to Buffalo. Byrd played last season under a one-year contract after the Bills retained his rights by applying the franchise tag. The Bills have the option of tagging Byrd once more this off-season, but are also making a push to sign the player to a long-term contract. Despite initial reservations, Byrd enjoyed playing in Pettines system and working with Henderson. The defence also featured the Bills most promising youngster, linebacker Kiko Alonso, an NFL defensive rookie of the year candidate. Wholesale Kyrie Irving Shoes . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The St. Louis Cardinals are pitching so well all they need right now to win is one run. Adam Wainwright became the NLs first nine-game winner, and the Cardinals beat Tampa Bay 1-0 on Tuesday night, the Rays third straight shutout loss. The Cardinals have three consecutive shutouts for the first time since April 2013. St. Louis, with 13 shutouts this season, was coming off 5-0 victories over Toronto on Saturday and Sunday. "Our starting pitching has been extremely good these last few, to say the least," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. It is the Cardinals first stretch of three consecutive road shutouts since Sept. 29, 1962-April 10, 1963 when St. Louis had four in a row. "Pretty amazing," said St. Louis slugger Matt Holliday, who homered. Tampa Bay has been shut out an AL-leading 10 times this season. The Rays, who have lost 14 of 15, have not scored a run in a club-record 28 innings. "Its kind of weird to watch because it just doesnt stay that negative for that long normally," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It just doesnt but it has. This is truly one of those anomaly moments where weve got to stick together as a group." Wainwright (9-3) scattered seven hits over seven innings. Trevor Rosenthal got the final four outs, including a base-loaded pop fly by Matt Joyce in the eighth, for his 17th save. Holliday put the Cardinals up 1-0 with his fourth homer this season, a long drive to left centre with two outs in the sixth off tough-luck loser Jake Odorizzi (2-7). Holliday and Kolten Wong both returned to the Cardinals lineup. Holliday was scratched Sunday due to a sore lower back, while Wong sat out three games with left shoulder soreness. Holliday said his back is still a little stiff. "Loosened up enough so I could get some good swings," he said. Odorizzi, a Cardinals fan who grew up about 30 miles from Busch Stadium, had a strong performancee in his first game against St.dddddddddddd. Louis. The right-hander gave up one run and three hits in a career-high 7 1-3 innings. "Today I felt I was really executing my pitches and nothing they could do was going to beat me," Odorizzi said. "One mistake by me and I got beat. It was the best outing Ive ever had in the big leagues." Odorizzi had allowed one baserunner, a fourth-inning walk to Holliday, before giving up consecutive two-out singles in the fifth to Jhonny Peralta and John Jay. The inning ended on a fly ball by Peter Bourjos. The Rays threatened in both the first and fourth innings. Ben Zobrist hit a fly ball with two on to end the first. Logan Forsythe lined out to second with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth. "Its a tough lineup, it really is," Wainwright said. "Theyre going through a funk, I know. As soon as we leave town, theyre going to break out. Ive got a feeling." Sam Freeman inherited two runners and then got two key outs in the eighth before Rosenthal replaced him. At least, that was Tim Duncans assessment after the Spurs ran their streak to 16 straight by beating the Denver Nuggets 133-102 on Friday night. This is their longest regular-season win streak since reeling off 17 in a row from Feb. 29 to March 31, 1996. And Popovich seems to be growing more antsy with every victory. "Oh, very. Very, very, very. Very much," Duncan said. "Hes a teacher and wants to teach. He wants the good and the bad. Even through this streak, hes been on us a tremendous amount, making sure we dont rest on just the wins, but were learning from game to game." Popovich found a teaching moment in the third quarter with the game well in hand. His team relaxed on one possession and allowed an easy transition basket by Randy Foye. Popovich quickly called timeout and voiced his displeasure to his team. "Even as much as were up, he was still on us the entire game," Duncan said. Hard to find too much fault with the Spurs effort in this one. Marco Belinelli scored 27 points, Duncan had 20 and the Spurs scored a season high in points. San Antonio also maintained a three-game lead for the top seed in the Western Conference. Its a quick turnaround for the Spurs, who host New Orleans on Saturday. "This (winning streak) is great challenge," Duncan said. "Its a big challenge. People can get lackadaisical and look past certain games. Weve done a good job of not doing that." Foye scored 20 for a banged-up Nuggets squad that lost for the fourth time in five games. Wilson Chandler was out with a strained groin, while Timofey Mozgov and Kenneth Faried were hampered by an illness. Faried still finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. "Theyre devastated, injury-wise," Popovich said. "Its not a fair deal." Still, a 31-point loss was hard for Nuggets coach Brian Shaw to absorb, even if he is missing quite a few starters to season-ending injuries. "That was an embarrassing loss," Shaw said. "Just from every standpoint of the game -- defensively, body langguage, energy, just embarrassing, and it starts with me, just doing whatever I need to do to get our guys prepared and to come out and give the kind of energy and effort we need, especially playing the top team in the league.dddddddddddd" Belinelli stepped into the starting lineup with Danny Green hobbled by an inflamed right foot and quickly found his rhythm. Belinelli scored 14 in the first quarter and finished 10 of 15 from the field. "We really love to move the ball together, thats why were winning together right now," Belinelli said. Popovich insisted before the game that hes not going to overextend his players to secure the No. 1 seed in the West. His goal is to keep them "as healthy and energetic as possible at this time of year." The veteran coach didnt have to worry about taxing his team too much in this one, building a 25-point lead midway through the third quarter and resting most of his starters for a majority of the fourth. All this winning so close to the playoffs is making Popovich a little anxious because, "maybe this comes too easy," he said. "Losing is not a bad thing at this point of the year." Trailing 20-14 in the first, the Spurs closed out the quarter on a 17-3 run. The Nuggets couldnt rally back into the game, like they did Wednesday in San Antonio when they trailed the Spurs by 24 only to make it close down the stretch, before falling 108-103. "We just let them do basically what they wanted to do," Foye said. "We had more fight on their court last game than we did on our court tonight. Thats unacceptable. We didnt bring it tonight and against a team like that if you dont bring it, its going to be a long night for you." NOTES: San Antonio kept Matt Bonner (strained calf) at home because, "he wasnt going to play anyway," Popovich said. ... The Spurs finished with 37 assists, including seven by C Tiago Splitter. ... Nuggets F Jan Vesely (bruised rib cage) was back on the court after missing two games. He finished with five points. ... Reserve G Evan Fournier had 15 points for the Nuggets. ... He didnt, and the play of the teams young players, notably rookie Odell Beckham Jr., and the teams refusal to quit down the stretch in a season marred by injuries make him optimistic about next season. Its optimism tempered by the frustration of repeated failure.I dont think that is an unfair statement, Mara said when asked if winning was a must next season.Even Coughlins two Super Bowl wins in 2008 and 12 wont save him.Right now I think Tom gives us the best chance to win going forward, Mara said.Whats interesting is that Mara did not give Coughlin an extension on a contract that runs through 2015. The Giants typically have not had head coaches work as lame ducks.Mara said he would discuss it with the 68-year-old Coughlin, who later joked he would like a 10-year extension. We are here to win, thats what this thing is about, the competitiveness of winning, Coughlin said. No. I am not going to do that. The idea of being in a win-or-else situation made Coughlin laugh, saying thats his approach to every season. Why would you do it for any other reason? Coughlin said. Youre supposed to win. This isnt the first time Coughlins job has been in jeopardy, and each time he turned things around.Coughlin would not say how much longer he wants to coach, saying his health and that of his wife, Judyy, might decide that issue.ddddddddddddhe Giants decision to stand pat came a day after the Jets — who share ownership of MetLife Stadium with the Giants — fired coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik.I do think we are on the right track, said Reese, who has had two good draft classes after a couple of poor ones. I do think we can have a good football team going into next season. The Giants new West Coast offence made significant strides, finishing 10th in the league under new co-ordinator Ben McAdoo. Eli Manning finished with 30 TD passes and 14 interceptions, and Beckham wowed the league with 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. The defence, however, was ranked 30th and special teams struggled, particularly on covering punt returns. That has put the status of defensive co-ordinator Perry Fewell and special teams counterpart Tom Quinn in doubt although their unit felt the effects of 22 players being placed on injured reserve. While Mara might make suggestions, he said Coughlin will decide on any changes to the coaching staff. He knows his legacy is on the line, Mara said. He doesnt want three losing seasons in a row.Reese, who also has been under fire, has had two very good draft classes, and Mara said he needs another.I heard Tom say every year is a win all, Reese said. You win Super Bowls, its what have you done for me lately? Here you have to continue to win. Its hard to do in this business because the league is built with cycles. If you win, you get penalized for winning, so you have to fall back and pick last in the draft. You lose coaches. Thats how the cycle goes. Our job is to beat the system. Thats what we pride ourselves on, and staying on top and staying relevant. The Giants havent done that lately, so next year will be a little more important.Mara said he would like to have defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and safety Antrel Rolle back next season, but only if the free agents can be signed for the right price. He added that the Giants are considering using a franchise tag on Pierre-Paul.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
After falling out of a playoff position earlier in the month, the Leafs have managed to turn things around with a familiar formula: Top-end scoring and stand-out goaltending. In this weeks “Leaf Report” podcast, Jonas Siegel and James Mirtle explain how Phil Kessel and Jonathan Bernier have again played large roles in getting the Leafs pointed in the right direction, but have also had help from a newly stabilized defence and contributions from the teams second and third lines. Speaking ahead of an exhibition match against Andre Agassi in London on March 3, Sampras said on a conference call Wednesday that he is impressed by Federers longevity. "Im amazed that he is up for more tennis," Sampras said. "He has done everything in the game and he could walk away tomorrow feeling great about it. But he still wants to travel and compete and Im in awe of it. He is a true lover of the sport." Following a disappointing 2013 season marred by back problems, Federer started this year on a high. Now working with new coach Stefan Edberg, he reached the final of his first tournament, at Brisbane, and then made the semifinals of the Australian Open for the 11th consecutive year. His run at Melbourne included wins over 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. Sampras, who retired after winning his 14th Grand Slam title at the 2002 U.ddddddddddddS. Open, said Federer should be comforted by a streak that finally ended with a defeat to Rafael Nadal. "I thought his level was quite good," Sampras said. "When youre playing against Rafa and if youre not quite on your game then it can seem like youre struggling. Rafa is a rock. But I do see Roger building from that, I think hes going to do well this year." Asked if Federer could win another Grand Slam title, Sampras said the Swiss "can do it" if he plays his best tennis. "Thats why hes playing, I dont think hes playing for anything else but to win some more majors," said Sampras, adding that Federers best chance would be on his favourite grass surface, at Wimbledon. Sampras was 31 when he decided to hang up his racket for good, while the 32-year-old Federer has hinted he could keep playing until the Rio Olympics in 2016. "As long as Roger is enjoying it and hes healthy, I can see him playing for another two, three, four more years," Sampras said. ' ' '
TORONTO - As anticipated, Thursday nights NBA Draft turned out to be a historic evening for Canadian basketball, however the Raptors, the countrys lone team, became reluctant spectators despite their best efforts to get in on the festivities. In many ways it was a celebration of how far the country has come and how much the sport has grown within it. In total, four Canadian players were selected - setting a league record - including three in the top 18, all from the Greater Toronto Area. For the second consecutive year Canada produced the top pick, 19-year-old phenom and Vaughan-native Andrew Wiggins, who will join last years No. 1 selection Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson and Dwight Powell - picked in the second-round of Thursdays draft - in Cleveland. Mississaugas Nik Stauskas followed suit, going to the Sacramento Kings at pick No. 8 before the Phoenix Suns - owners of the 18th pick - nabbed Brampton point guard Tyler Ennis, a player that sat atop the Raptors board when he heard his name called. It was a bittersweet moment for the 19-year-old Ennis, who was finally realizing his lifelong dream, albeit two picks away from beginning his career with his hometown team. The Raptors, drafting 20th, struck out on their top target but it wasnt for a lack of effort or interest. "We tried everything," Dwane Casey admitted shortly after the first-round concluded. "It just didnt work out." Masai Ujiri and his staff tracked Ennis throughout his freshman year at Syracuse and quickly became enamoured with his poise at the point guard position. Until recently they believed there was little chance he would fall to them, or even come close. With his stock fluctuating leading up to the draft, Ujiri hoped Ennis would be available to them, also exploring several scenarios to trade up and even entice the Suns to give him up after the selection had been made. With Ennis off the board, Ujiri opted for the next player on his wish list, Brazilian mystery man Bruno Caboclo "We decided we lost one," said the Raptors general manager, "were not going to lose the other one. So we jumped on it." The Raptors came that close to drafting what would have been the first Canadian selected in their 20-year franchise history, but given the rate in which the country is producing high-level talent its only a matter of time until that vision - which once seemed like a pipe dream - becomes a reality. "Ennis was a target for us but he was picked by another team," Ujiri lamented. "We will have Canadians on our team. Definitely we will have Canadian players on our team. Theyre all over the league now. The last two first picks have been Canadian." "We tried and it didnt work out this time," he continued, "but were glad theres a lot a lot of them in the league and eventually well get a couple of Canadians here, trust me. Itll come, well get them here." Thursday served as a friendly reminder, Canada isnt going anywhere. After hemming and hawing for weeks, the Cavaliers finally decided on Wiggins with their No. 1 overall pick. Decked out in a captivating black suit decorated with white floral print and topped off with a black bow tie, the one and done Kansas star couldnt hide his joy when first-year commissioner Adam Silver called his name. "A thousand thoughts are going through my head right now," Wiggins said minutes later. "Its a dream come true. Ive been dreaming of this moment since I was a little kid. My dream was just to make the NBA and now going to high school and college the opportunity of going number one came into talk and now I accomplished that. So its a crazy feeling right now. I dont even know how I feel. It doesnt feel real right now." "I always believed it," Stauskas added. "I believed in myself and I dont think many other people did but this is something Ive always felt is a possibility for me and I just kept working my hardest to make it happen. Its a cliche but dreams really do come true when you put all your effort into it." What could this night mean for the country? "I just think its huge," Wiggins said. "It opens doors for all the youth and everyone in Canada. It gives them hope. Because coming up when I was Canada, I wasnt ranked or nothing, I wasnt known. I didnt have no offers or anything like that. But I just kept my head straight and kept working on my game and look where I am today. So I just think it gives everyone hope that they can do the same thing and accomplish whatever I do because its possible if they work hard." The Raptors, like most of the 29 other teams, did pass up on four other eligible Canadians that went undrafted Thursday. Montreals Khem Birch, Calgarys Jordan Bachynski, Toronto-native and reigning Big 12 player of the year Melvin Ejim and the 7-foot-5 Sim Bhullar, also from the Toronto area, didnt hear their name called. Instead, Toronto opted for UConn forward DeAndre Daniels with an early second-round pick and traded the 59th overall pick to the Brooklyn Nets. Ujiri has maintained that if and when the Raptors do add a Canadian he wont be employed for his passport and he wont be sitting at the end of the bench. The pressure surrounding that type of player in that situation would be unfair, hes said. All four of the undrafted Canadian players are expected to catch on with Summer League teams, hoping to earn a spot on an NBA roster before weighing their options overseas or in the D-League. Draisaitl, the Edmonton Oilers No. 3 overall selection who doesnt turn 19 until Oct. 27, is tentatively slotted in the No. 2 position at centre, with only Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ahead of him. Fellow 2014 Canadian team picks Nikolaj Ehlers (Winnipeg) and William Nylander (Toronto) will be watched carefully this fall, but none begins so potentially high in the lineup. TSN.ca is monitoring Draisaitls training camp performance closely, with Edmonton bureau chief Ryan Rishaug filing regular reports. Wednesday, Sept. 24 - Edmonton vs. Winnipeg - Draisaitl took a small step backwards Wednesday night with a mediocre performance in Winnipeg. Draisaitl looked sluggish right from the start (perhaps due to an endurance test Tuesday) and was lacking the creativity and poise he displayed in the game against Calgary. Draisaitl finished with one shot on net in 15:45 of ice time and won just five of 17 face offs. He also turned the puck over a number of times, including in the final minute of a one goal game. Five-on-five he generated little in the way of offence. Day 5 Assessment: Continues to work hard, but below average night at both ends of the ice. He was outplayed by fellow youngsters Bogdan Yakimov and Vladimir Tkachev. Tuesday, Sept. 23 - On-ice testing It was the dreaded RHIET (repeat high intensity endurance test) at camp, but Draisaitl looked strong throughout his six sprints up and down the ice. During the practice portion of the day, he skated on a line with Benoit Pouliot and 5-foot-9, 141 pound winger Russian Vladamir Tkachev. All three are expected to play together Wednesday in Winnipeg - the first game for Draisaitl without offensive winger David Perron on his line. Day 4 Assessment Draisaitl made it through the endurance test on two feet with all his equipment on and kept up with his group. Thats a good day for any player. Monday, Sept. 22 - Off-day Sunday, Sept. 21 - Edmonton vs. Calgary Draisaitl made a fantastic play on his first shift, sending a perfect cross ice pass to Marco Roy for the games opening goal. Once again playing on a line with David Perron and Benoit Pouliot, they spent most of the night in the offensive zone, Draisaitl creating several scoring chances with his patience and poise. Draisaitl nearly set up another goal in the second period, forcing a turnover in the offensive corner and finding a defenceman in the high slot who fired wide. Draisaitl saw some time on the penalty kill and the power play, making intelligent plays with the majority of his touches. Defensively he is trying to do the right things, coming back deep into his own zone to help out, and putting himself in good spotts for the breakout.dddddddddddd He saw time on the power play and penalty kill and made intelligent plays with the majority of his touches. He was 8-5 (62 per cent) in the faceoff circle. Day 3 Assessment - An excellent start to his exhibition season. As the pace around him goes up, Draisaitl is having no trouble elevating his game. Saturday, Sept. 20 - Practice It was back to work early for Draisaitl at an 8:30am practice conducted by Dallas Eakins. The entire Oiler braintrust, from Kevin Lowe down to the scouting staff, eyeballed the proceedings from their corner perch. Draisaitl continues to look at ease skating on a line with David Perron and Benoit Pouliot. He handled the puck with confidence during line rushes and made sharp tape-to-tape passes. When practice wrapped up, Drasaitl was directed to the faceoff circle by Eakins for faceoff pointers from AHL veteran centre Will Acton. Day 2 Assessment Overall, a solid day at practice, though Sunday night will be the biggest test yet as he will likely skate in his first NHL exhibition game. Friday, Sept. 19 - First Day On The Ice Draisaitl made the most of an opportunity to play with NHLers David Perron and Benoit Pouliot in a full speed scrimmage. Draisaitls line scored on the games first shift, again in the second half and was by far the best trio throughout the 3-1 win against a team featuring Mark Arcobello and Anton Lander - two players Draisaitl is battling at centre. Draisaitl showed good speed on a backcheck catching winger Nail Yakupov in a foot race and forcing him wide. "He was good, he can distribute the puck, make a play on his forehand and backhand," said head coach Dallas Eakins. "He showed some spurts that he does have some speed. There is room for improvement there, but he shows he can do it and he can certainly move the puck, distribute it and he certainly didnt look out of place on the ice." Day 1 Assessment Overall, it was a good day in which Draisaitl stood out as the best of the centres (No. 1 centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins didnt play). On this weeks TSNFC podcast we spent a long time discussing the handball decision that effectively ended Vancouver Whitecaps season. Much has been said and written about whether or not World Cup referee Mark Geiger made the right call to penalize Kendall Waston in last weeks playoff match at Dallas, with many differing opinions on the matter. There doesnt seem to be a consensus, although Geigers boss - referees chief Peter Walton - said it was the correct decision and a standard call. As a veteran Premier League referee who now runs the Professional Referees Organization in North America, Waltons opinion should be respected, but the controversy surrounding the decision - and many other handball decisions we see all over the world each week - could easily be avoided if there were a change to the law. In my view, there are two things wrong with the current law. Firstly, the punishment doesnt fairly reflect the size of the crime. Secondly, there is too much room for interpretation of the referee which makes consistency of decisions almost impossible. Here are the main points of the current FIFA Law: Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration: ? the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand) ? the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball) ? the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement Deliberate - done consciously and intentionally I dont think Kendall Waston made a conscious and intentional decision to handle the ball inside the penalty area in the last 10 minutes of a playoff match. In my mind it was a momentary lapse in concentration from the towering defender rather than a deliberate act. In relation to this law, it seems deliberate can also mean a player didnt react quickly enough to move his hand/arm out of the way of the ball. But the fact the law allows such ambiguity means officials are in the spotlight more than necessary whether or not they get the decision right. There must be a better way. Although video replays will certainly assist officials decision making in other areas, in the instance of Waston it wouldnt have made much difference because even with review, the decision would have been made depending on the officials interpretation of the law. One suggestion I have seen is to award a penalty anytime the ball hits a hand or arm inside the area whether it is intentional or not. A clear rule - it doesnt matter how it happens, if the ball strikes the hand, it is a penalty. Theres very little room for argument and interpretation there, but I think it would lead to far too many penalties and also an excessive number of game changing moments. Again, the punishment wouldnt match the offence. New Law So how about this. In order to provide clarity, I would be in favour of a rule change along the following lines: Anytime a player makes contact with the ball inside the penalty area with his hand or arm, an indirect free kick will be given. There is no room for interpretation - if it hits the arm or hand whether deliberate or not, it is an indirect free kick. There is one exception. If a player handles the ball to prevent a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity, a penalty is given. With this rule applied, Kendall Wastons handball would have been penalized with an indirect free kick, still giving the opposing team the benefit of a set piece close to goal but eliminating the need for a referee to award a penalty for an incident that was not going to end in a goal. For me, that far better reflects the size of the infringement and also would remove much of the debate surrounding penalty kicks awarded for handball. Im not na?ve enough to expect that changing the law would eliminate all problems. Im sure in some instances there would still be controversy and debate surrounding what is or isnt an obvious goal scoring opportunity. But I believe it would drastically decrease the amount of times a game is decided by a referees decision and therefore lead to more post-game talk about players instead of officiating – and that can only be a good thing. Tom Brady completed 23-of-35 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown for New England (12-3), which will clinch the AFCs top seed if Denver loses at Cincinnati on Monday night. With the Patriots clinging to a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, Brady threw an interception while under pressure, a theme throughout the game. Cornerback Marcus Williams picked off the pass that deflected off wide receiver Brandon LaFells hands at the New England 31-yard line. The Patriots defense stiffened as a third-down sack by linebacker Donta Hightower forced a 52-yard Nick Folk field goal attempt that was tipped by lineman Vince Wilfork and landed short. New England ran out the remaining 5:16, converting a pair of third downs. Danny Amendola, filling in for Julian Edelman on both offense and special teams, was tackled near the marker at the New York 48-yard line after a screen pass on 3rd-and-7. Some confusion ensued as the ball appeared to be inches shy of a first down based upon a measurement. However, the official signaled a first down, leading to a unsuccessful challenge by the Jets. Brandon Bolden then ran around the right edge for 17 yards on 3rd-and-1 to seal the win. We were able to make the plays we needed to make at the end of the game and thats a credit to the players, said New England coach Bill Belichick, who earned his 230th career win to surpass Curly Lambeau for sole possession of fourth place in NFL history. Geno Smith passed for 210 yards on 17-of-27 efficiency with a touchdown and one interception for the Jets (3-12). Another game that I thought we had a chance to win against New England, but thats been the story. Probably four of the last five times weve playyed them it seems like that, but to their credit they find ways to win, said Jets coach Rex Ryan.dddddddddddd The New York defense hounded Brady right from the start, registering three first-quarter sacks. New England began the second quarter in New York territory after a 39-yard punt return by Amendola, who had eight catches on 11 targets for 63 yards in place of Edelman. The Patriots leading receiver missed the game with a concussion and a thigh injury. Brady capped the six-play, 36-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. The tight end lined up wide left and hauled in a back-shoulder fade from three yards out. The Jets tied the game at 7-7 when tight end Jeff Cumberland beat safety Patrick Chung on a seam route for a 25-yard touchdown catch. Center Nick Mangold was carted off the field with a left ankle injury during the 12-play, 87-yard drive. Folk kicked a 26-yard field goal to put New York up 10-7 late in a first half that saw New England limited to 52 yards. The Jets reached the red zone on their opening possession of the third quarter, but settled for a 23-yard Folk field goal. New England then changed its tempo on offense, going no-huddle, and had success moving the ball. The drive ultimately stalled at the New York 6-yard line and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 24-yard field goal. Smith was then picked off by linebacker Jamie Collins on an underthrown pass to tight end Jace Amaro. The Patriots moved in front off the turnover as Jonas Gray ran for a 1-yard touchdown 1:09 into the fourth quarter. Folk made a 37-yard field goal with 7:53 remaining to cap the ensuing New York drive. Game Notes New York wide receiver Percy Harvin (ribs) left the game and didnt return ... The seventh seed from Westmount, Que., will next play the unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania (42nd), who beat Germanys Carina Witthoeft (104th) 6-4, 6-4 later Friday. Bouchard made her breakthrough in Melbourne a year ago, reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal and duplicating that showing four months later in Paris before playing the Wimbledon final. The 20-year-olds win over the 36th-ranked Garcia made amends for a loss to the French player last year in Acapulco. I wasnt playing great tennis in the first. I feel like she was putting some pressure on me and I really didnt feel like I got a rhythm, said Bouchard. But Im happy that I just kept going. Even if it wasnt going so well, I was able to turn it around. So, I loosened up a bit and started going for my shots and playing my game, which is what I need to do more. Probably taking a bit of time away from her stepping in. Though she will not be facing a seed in the next round, Bouchard remains on guard against any potential upset threat in her weekend fourth-round test. Every player here is really good. Its the fourth round of a Grand Slam.dddddddddddd Anyone you play will be super-tough, she said. Ill be ready for a battle, Ill try to play my game and have some fun also. Bouchard earned her win over Garcia with a performance witnessed by her several-dozen strong singing, chanting Genie Army fans, all wearing matching maple leaf t-shirts. She finished the match in 78 minutes. The opening set turned into a struggle for both women, with six breaks of serve. Bouchard struck a key blow in the marathon sixth game which lasted nearly a quarter of an hour and did not end until Bouchard converted on a seventh break point as Garcia netted a backhand for 3-all. But moments later, Bouchard was on the back foot after losing serve, only to get it back in the next game and square the set at 4-4. Bouchard broke in the 12th game to claim the 56-minute set, as Garcia sent a forehand wide. The momentum completely shifted in the second set as Bouchard suddenly became untouchable, winning the contest on her second match point. I just tried to stay calm, Bouchard said. I knew that I would hopefully find my groove at some point. Kept going, going, tried to stay with her on her service games. I was telling myself to be ready for anything and try to get a rhythm even though it was hard. Finally it clicked a little bit and I was able to roll. ' ' '
CLEVELAND -- Kyrie Irving has been knocked out by an injury again, and its really painful for the Cavaliers. Wholesale Shoes Ireland . Irving will miss at least two weeks with a strained tendon in his left biceps, a major blow to Clevelands chances of making the NBA playoffs with only a month left in the regular season. Irving got hurt during the first half of Sunday nights loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The All-Star point guard did not return after missing all five shots and leaving the game for medical evaluation and treatment. He flew back with the Cavaliers and Monday underwent an MRI, which revealed "a strain in the long head tendon" of his biceps, the Cavs said in a release. The 21-year-old will be shut down for two weeks and re-evaluated. The Cavs said the tendons response "will determine the most appropriate course of treatment." Irvings injury couldnt come at a worse time for the Cavs. Hell miss at least eight of the final 15 games, and without their leading scorer and best player, it will be tough for the Cavs (26-41) to clinch the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland begins the week 4 1-2 games behind Atlanta, and the Cavs have a difficult schedule ahead with Miami, Oklahoma City and Houston in town over the next five days. And, equally troubling, is that Irving is again missing significant time due to an injury. He sat out 38 games his first two seasons with a variety of injuries, including a broken nose, fractured jaw, broken finger, sprained shoulder and concussion. One of Irvings goals was to play in all 82 games this season, but hes already missed three with a bruised knee and is expected to sit for eight more. Irving has scoffed at the notion that he is injury prone, but he hasnt made it through a full season and he was also sidelined during the summer after his rookie season when he broke his hand slamming it into a padded wall during a practice in Las Vegas. Irvings injury issues predated him turning pro as he played in just 11 games as a freshman at Duke because of a foot injury. Most of Irvings injuries have been unavoidable and bad luck because he plays hard and is unafraid to drive to the basket and draw contact from bigger, stronger players. Its not clear exactly when Irving was hurt on Sunday night. As the Cavs move forward theyll have to factor Irvings spotty medical history into their decision as to whether or not to offer him a maximum-year contract extension this summer. Cleveland hasnt made the playoffs since 2010, and this was supposed be the year the Cavs returned to the post-season and stayed out of the draft lottery. However, the club has underachieved in coach Mike Browns second stint and owner Dan Gilbert fired general manager Chris Grant last month. Now without Irving, the Cavs climb has gotten even steeper. Lewis, the third-ranked player in the world, looked down in frustration after missing a birdie chance at the 18th hole. The Texan matched Lee at 9-under 204. In nearly ideal scoring conditions with little if any wind, Lee shot 70. But Caroline Masson, who shared the second-round lead with Lee, followed consecutive 67s with a 75. Suzann Pettersen, Dori Carter and Julieta Granada shot 68 and were a stroke behind the leaders. Cristie Kerr (69), Christina Kim (70) and Natalie Gulbis (71) were among seven players tied at 7 under and only two strokes off the lead. Also in that group was 22-year-old Jennifer Johnson, who had an opening bogey before shooting a 65 for the best round of the day at Las Colinas Country Club. Lee, the South Korean who hasnt won on the LPGA Tour since 2006, had the lead alone at 10 under after consecutive birdies. The second of those birdies came after an approach to within a few feet at the par-5 seventh hole, and was her last of the day. On the par-3 13th hole, Lee was still 10 under when her tee shot went over the green and she pitched past the hole before a par-saving putt. Lewis then had a birdie chance slide just past to hole to remain a stroke back -- though she got even on thhe next hole. Discount Shoes Ireland. Lees approach at the 416-yard 14th hole settled near a scoring tower by the green and a par putt came up just short of going in the hole. Lewis got even, though she looked up in frustration when a birdie chance for the outright lead rolled just right of the hole. Lewis is an eight-time winner, but has had six runner-up finishes in 18 starts since winning the Womens British Open in August. She has been sixth or better in seven of eight tournaments this season, including another runner-up finish in San Francisco last week. Masson opened Saturday with a bogey, but responded with consecutive birdies on the fourth and fifth holes. But her drive at the 403-yard eighth hole went out of bounds, and she hit her fourth shot behind the green on way to a triple-bogey 7. Another bogey followed at No. 9 and she was suddenly five strokes back at the turn -- where she still was when the round ending. The 75 matched Massons closing round score last year when she led the first two rounds of the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout before finishing 15th. Inbee Park, the No. 1 player in the world and the defending champion, shot 68 and was only three strokes back.
